DIEDRICH (DICK) FRIESEN
April 26, 1935 – January 27, 2017

Our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather, Dick Friesen, passed away Friday, January 27, 2017, after a short battle with cancer, at the age of 81 years.

Diedrich Schulz Friesen was born April 26, 1935 close to Main Centre, Saskatchewan. His parents Abram and Agatha Friesen, moved to the Steinbach area in 1948.

On June 22, 1957, Dick married Evelyn Letkeman from Ste. Anne, MB. Born to them were three girls: Cathy, Pearl and Cindy. They made their home in Steinbach for most of their years.

Dick worked at various occupations including: cement truck driver, Shell Service Station owner, dairy farmer and farm equipment sales. Buying and selling was a passion of his.

Dick was baptized in the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in 1955. He has been an active member at Grace Mennonite Church since 1961. Dick loved to visit with people. He was an usher for many years, which was a good fit for him as he visited with people each Sunday in the foyer making friends with all ages, especially children.

He enjoyed building things for Evelyn and his family, reading, camping, fishing, traveling, entertaining, meeting people for coffee, volunteering at Mennonite Heritage Village, as well as other organizations.

Dick’s greatest love has always been Evelyn, his best friend and companion. He loved being active in the life of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were very special to him and gave him much joy. Besides his wife Evelyn, he is survived by his three children and their families: Cathy Barkman (Paul, James, David), Pearl and Kurt Barz (Ingrid, Brent), Cindy and Bruce Blatz (Steven, Samantha), nine great-grandchildren, two brothers: Ben (Hazel), Tommy (Martha) and one sister Helen (Pete) Friesen.

He was predeceased by one son-in-law Ron Barkman, four brothers and one sister. Also, missing him will be many relatives and friends.

The family is grateful for all the prayers and every kindness shown as well as for the care and compassion from the staff at Bethesda Regional Health Centre.

Dick will always have a special place in our hearts…so many wonderful memories over so many years.

The funeral service will held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace Mennonite Church in Steinbach, MB.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Dick may be made to Bethesda Foundation, Steinbach, MB.
