ERNEST JULIUS SLYWCHUK
March 28, 1931 – December 13, 2016

Ernest (Ernie) Julius Slywchuk age 85, of Steinbach, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Bethesda Hospital and is secure in his Savior's arms.

He is survived by his special friend Norma, one daughter, two sons, one brother, and their families.

He was predeceased by: one son, one son-in-law, and one sister.

Dad was born in Winnipeg on March 28, 1931, where he lived with his parents until he was 7. His family took part in a provincial government program which gave people a hand during the Great Depression years. The program helped settle people on a 1/4 section of land for a nominal fee. It gave them some livestock such as a cow, pigs, rabbits and chickens as well as seeds for gardens and crops. That is how Dad became a man of the earth, from that point on he was hooked on farming. Between his youth and taking over the family farm, Dad spent some time in lumber camps and in the construction industry setting up oil refineries and bulk fuel stations. He often talked about his escapades during those years. However, that was short lived and he went back to the farm, where he spent the next 30 years dairy farming in La Broquerie. After the farm sold, he continued working on farms all over western Canada.

Dad had such a love for his family and the outdoors - fishing, hunting, and gardening. Dad also loved music and dancing the night away with Norma. He also was extremely well read and was a walking encyclopedia, which made him a champ at Scrabble and crossword puzzles.

In the last 2 years, church became his central anchor and the most important thing for him. At the young age of 84, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. He rarely missed a service. He started calling us Tuesday to make sure we were picking him up for church which was Saturday.

The funeral service will be held Monday, December 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 Hwy 52W, Steinbach, MB.
