LENA BLOCK
September 5, 1924 - December 7, 2016

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our mother, Lena Block, at Bethesda Place on December 7, 2016 at the age of 92.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Raymond (Sonya), Larry (Christine), Christine (Mel) Senkow and Gloria (Luciano) Armenti, along with grandchildren and great grandchildren: Gary (Shelley) Sara and Lauren Block; Clayton (Andrea) Austin, Brayden, Allison, and Travis Block; Carlee Block; Corey (Antonietta) Elena, Matthew and Justin Senkow; Gerry (Cheryl) Hayden, Coltyn and Wyatt Senkow; Ryan (Dorian) Brodie and Sadie Senkow; Jessica and Brendin Armenti and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as by her friends and neighbours.

Lena was predeceased by her husband James and parents Anna and Oleksa Smuk, sister Mary (John) Gregoraschuk, extended family Dora Gigolyk and Mary Karalash; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Steve (Helen) Block; Paul (Helen) Block; Ann (Nick) Anchikoski; Tinnie (Steve) Lubky; Olga (Emil) Yurkowski.

Mom was born on September 5, 1924 on route to Canada, and settled with her parents in Pansy, Manitoba. She married James Block on Nov 8, 1941. Together they farmed in the community of Sarto, Manitoba. Mom was a very hard worker, raising 2 sons and 2 daughters, while dad was away working to support the family. In addition to raising her family, she took care of milking the cows, feeding stock, raising chickens and pigs and planting a large garden. There was never a shortage of work between sewing, canning, cooking, baking, gardening, driving meals out the field and picking mushrooms and berries in between.

She had great love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She encouraged them to be kind, caring and helpful to one another. With her green thumb and passion for house plants, her ivy’s, ferns and African violets nearly filled the whole living room.

Mom will always be remembered for her kind heartedness and genuine hospitality.

“Remember me as if I were a rose , even though I could not speak, see me for its beauty as I still felt your presence, your soft breath and tender touch”

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Bethesda Place Personal Care Home for the endless care, utmost respect and kindness given our mother and to Birchwood Funeral Chapel for their compassionate support and professional guidance with funeral arrangements. The family also thanks those who came to visit mom during her stay at Bethesda Nursing Home.

The Prayer Service will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 Hwy 52 W, Steinbach, MB. The Interment followed at St. Michaels Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Sarto, MB.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba, 10 – 120 Donald Street; Wpg., MB R3C 4G2 or the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
