1922-2016
Peacefully, on July 30, 2016, Martha K. Schellenberg, aged 94, passed away at the Menno Home in Grunthal, MB. She leaves to cherish her memory her sons Ron (Terri) and Brad and daughter Judi (Al) Peterson. She will always have a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren: Kimberly, Jordan (Jodi), Joshua (Sarah), Ana, Charissa and great-granddaughter Saylor.
She is survived by one brother, John K. Reimer and one sister, Elma Wiebe; sisters-in-law Edna Reimer and Elsie Reimer. She was predeceased by her husband George K. Schellenberg in 2005.
Mom was born in Steinbach, MB on July 25, 1922 to Isaac W. and Margaretha Reimer. She helped around her parents’ and grandparents’ homes and later finished high school before going on to nurse’s training at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1951. Mom worked in Norquay, SK, for a year before returning to Steinbach. Mom and Dad were married on August 8, 1952. They farmed in the Tourond area where their three children were born. In 1964, they moved to a farm west of Oak Lake, MB.
During their time in Oak Lake, Mom worked as a nurse, first in the Virden Hospital and later at the Westman Nursing Home. For years she was involved in the Oak Lake Mennonite Church as librarian, a member of the Ladies Aide and sang in a ladies trio. She was known for her gracious hospitality to neighbours and friends. In 1985, the farm was sold and Mom and Dad retired to Kleefeld, MB.
In her retirement years she was involved in the Kleefeld EMC food groups, Bible studies, and Cradle Roll. Mom and Dad enjoyed many bus tours and trips to visit children and grandchildren over the years. Special memories were made with regular family holidays in Fairmont, BC.
After Dad passed away in 2005, Mom sold their home on Third Street and moved into Village Oaks where she enjoyed the community there.
Throughout her life, she remained faithful to God and prayed continually for her family and strength for each day.
Special thanks to the staff at the Menno Home for their excellent care and compassion in seeing Mom through her final months.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Kleefeld EMC church. Kleefeld, MB, with the interment following at the church cemetery, Kleefeld, MB.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory of Martha may be made to the Gideons, Guelph, ON.
“We will always remember the happy times, Mom.
We love you and we’ll miss you.”
