EDWARD WOHLGEMUTH
March 28, 1928 - March 28, 2016

Edward Alvin Wohlgemuth was born March 28, 1928 and was released from his house of clay 88 years later, March 28, 2016 ~ his personal day. Eddie was the fourth child of John and Martha Wohlgemuth. His childhood with his ten siblings was happy and secure, and he enjoyed an active youth life. His Grandma Wiebe was a special member of their busy household. The family resided in the Clearsprings area near Steinbach.

Dad was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite at Steinbach on December 12, 1943, along with his sisters Alice and Mildred. His brothers Winston and Gladwin were baptized a short time later. These choices brought great rejoicing to the family, and then how they all loved to sing together!

Alice Toews became his bride on October 22, 1950. Alice’s sister Irma and Gladwin Barkman were wed in the same service. Dad and Mom shared 61 years.

Dad was a loving father, teaching us many lessons. His grandchildren, and later his great-grandchildren, were dear to him. He loved people and took special interest in them. Dad and Mom were Papa Eddies to many, especially in the Beausejour congregation.

Dad served his Savior by being a consecrated Christian, a multi-term song leader, a worker in the church outreaches in Eastern Canada and Belize. Dad was a dedicated caregiver to Mom the last four years of her life. He sat faithfully by her bedside, finding it hard to leave to visit their children for a day or two.

Dad discovered his knack for bookkeeping while in his teens. In 1954 Dad and Mom moved to Sinclair, Manitoba for a ten-year farming venture. An accounting job brought them back to Steinbach in 1964. In 1978 they moved to the newly-formed Beausejour congregation, where Dad again became involved in farming. Due to Mom’s declining health they returned to Steinbach in 2008. In time he was able to move into the Maplewood Suites, and be under the same roof as Mom. This made it so much easier for him to be with her. He enjoyed being near his siblings, cousins and friends. He loved visiting with the nieces and nephews that came to visit.

Treasuring memories are two sons and two daughters: Carolyn and Ken Wohlgemuth, Kenville, Manitoba, Bruce and Kathy Wohlgemuth, Riding Mountain, Manitoba, Rhonda and George Friesen, Riding Mountain, Manitoba, Rodney and Marg Wohlgemuth, Beausejour, Manitoba; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, family friend Ruth Isaac; his siblings: Winston and Emily Wohlgemuth, Mildred Penner, Olive and James Toews, Katherine and Johnnie Warkentin, Norman and Darlene Wohgemuth, Frances Goossen, brother-in-law Stanley Barkman, sister-in-law Libby Wohlgemuth; Alice’s family: Irma Barkman, Ken and Lil Toews, Virginia Fast, Melvin and Bernice Toews, Louise and Bert Bartel, Franklin and Helen Toews, and Howard and Linda Toews. Preceding him are his wife Alice, his parents, three brothers, one sister, four brothers-in-law, and two sisters-in-law.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Beausejour, Manitoba, with viewing prior to the service. Visitation at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Steinbach, Manitoba Wednesday, March 30, 2016.

We are grateful to Dr. Reimer, the Bethesda Emergency Team, and second-floor nursing staff for your compassionate care. A special thank-you to the Maplewood Manor caregivers for the love and unselfish care you gave Dad.
