ANNIE ELVIRA BARTEL
Mar. 20, 1927-Mar. 26, 2016
Annie Elvira greeted this world on Mar. 20, 1927 in Greenland, MB. Her parents were Jacob T. and Agnes Reimer. She was the oldest of 10 children. Anne passed away on Saturday, Mar. 26, 2016 at Bethesda Place PCH in Steinbach, MB. She reached the age of 89 years and 6 days.
In her teenage years, Mom gave her heart to the Lord and remained faithful to her commitment all her life.
She married Harvey Bartel on July 25, 1948. Our parents started out together by operating a dairy farm in the Clearsprings area.
Their first child, Timothy John Douglas, was born May 13, 1949. Five more children would join the gang in the following order: Norman, Edith, Marj, David, and Carolyn. Tragedy and sorrow struck our family when Tim was killed in a car accident on Feb. 13, 1976.
In 1965, we uprooted and moved to Grandview, MB to operate a beef and grain farm, and later got back into dairy farming. This is where we (the children) grew up.
In 1979, Mom and Dad were in retirement mode and moved back to Steinbach, once again settling on a 40-acre hobby farm in Ridgewood. Mom enjoyed working in the housekeeping department at Bethesda Hospital until the age of 65. They moved into Woodhaven Apartments in 2004, which they enjoyed for two years until Dad died in 2006. Mom stayed here until 2012. Next, she moved into Cedarwood Apartment (an assisted living facility) where she enjoyed the company of her sister, Elma, who lived a few doors down the hallway from her.
Mom and Dad loved gardening, planting many vegetable and flower gardens. Mom was always serving others (particularly meals). She cooked many meals for us all.
She was hospitalized on Oct. 8, 2015 at Bethesda Hospital due to congestive heart failure plus kidney failure. Mom remained in the hospital until Mar. 9, 2016 when she moved to Bethesda Place in Steinbach. She only stayed there for 15 days until her passing on Saturday, Mar. 26, 2016.
She was predeceased by her husband Harvey; her son Tim; three brothers, Jack, Jim and Gary; and her parents.
Mom leaves to mourn, Rennie and Fran Friesen and family of Edberg, AB; Norman of Enderby, BC; Edith and Sid and family of Steinbach, MB; Marj and Alf and family of Armstrong, BC; David and Susan and family of Ponoka, AB; Carolyn and Dean and family of Steinbach, MB; including many extended family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr Toews and the many nurses who cared for Mom, and the health care workers from Cedarwood, Bethesda Hospital, and Bethesda Place. Thanks to Aunt Sue for your love and support to Mom. Also, a special thanks to her many friends and family who prayed and supported her during this time.
The viewing took place on Wednesday, Mar. 30 at 7 p.m. at Ridgewood Church, Steinbach, MB.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Mar. 31 at 2 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with the interment to follow at the church cemetery. The reception will follow at Ridgewood Church.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Annie may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or Canadian Diabetes Association (MB Branch).
