LENA BORKOWSKY (NEE SCHNELLERT)
May 2, 1939 - March 11, 2016
Lena Borkowsky passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the age of 76.
She is survived by her husband Art, children: Roxanne Reimer, Kelvin (Noreen), Jennifer (Dale) Clark; and five grandchildren: Zoe, Kayla, Connor, Ben, Ian; brother Arnie (Hilla), sister-in-law Wendy and brother-in-law Henry Schalla.
She is predeceased by her parents: Rudolf and Olga (Piel); sisters: Ida Kisser, Anne Schalla; brothers: Fred, Harold; and one grandson Nikolas Reimer.
Lena was born on May 2, 1939 south of Steinbach on her family farm. After helping her parents on the farm, she moved to Winnipeg and worked as a nurse’s aide at the General Hospital. Later she relocated to Steinbach to work for Dr. Krueger.
Lena married Art Borkowsky on June 17, 1961. She and Art dairy farmed together until 2001 when they moved to Steinbach. Retirement included involvement in the Red Hat Society, Cancer Care volunteering, daffodil drive, women’s networking, breast cancer support group, bible study and gardening. Together they enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, the East Coast, Australia, Alaska by cruise ship, and annual visits to Alberta. Lena enjoyed canning, cooking, baking, and had a green thumb for house plants, flowers, summer gardening.
Special thanks to palliative and home care nurses and aides and hospital staff for their care and support.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Steinbach, MB.
