MARGARET (MARGARETHA REIMER) HIEBERT

May 4, 1923 – January 7, 2016

Margaret Hiebert passed away at Steinbach Bethesda Place on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the age of 92. She has moved on to her heavenly home where there will be no more pain or sorrow.

Margaret was born May 4, 1923 in Silberfeld Village near Gretna, Manitoba to Jacob F. and Katharina B. Reimer.

In 1926, Margaret and her family moved to Paraguay where she grew up. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early on in life and later was baptized on her confession of faith.

Margaret married Jacob K. Hiebert September 21, 1944 with whom she shared 48 years. God blessed them with 8 children.

Life in the Chaco was not always easy and Mom’s strong determination and innovation was instrumental in providing and caring for the family.

In 1965, Mom and Dad with their children moved back to Canada and made their home in Steinbach, Manitoba. They joined Steinbach Mennonite Church and Mom embraced the opportunities to fellowship and serve with the Ladies Groups.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, Mom was a skilled seamstress and taught sewing classes and sewed for others including shirts, suits, wedding dresses, uniforms, and blankets. She also worked as a health care aide at Rest Haven Nursing Home and later as a cook at Bethesda Hospital.

In retirement, Mom volunteered and used her many skills sewing for friends and family, quilting at the Museum, working at the MCC store and caring for her grandchildren. She had a genuine passion to serve and do things for others.

Mom was thankful for her many friends and for the ability to live independently after Dad’s passing. Her strong determination to love God, others, and her family, leave us the family a good example to follow.

She had a deep love for her family and enjoyed caring for her children and grandchildren. Each one had a very special place in her heart, and she valued them all. Found written by Mom was the following prayer: “God for all the many blessings, most especially my family, I give thanks. Guide us and bless us all the days to come, keep us on your path and bring us safely home at day’s end. I wish, I hope, and I pray for an unbroken circle in heaven.”

Left to cherish Margaret’s memory are two children: Sieg (Wanda) Hiebert and Regina (Abe) Giesbrecht; two daughters-in-law, Susan (Mike) Matskiw, Selma Hiebert; and two sons-in-law, Roy Letkeman, Anthony (Lilly) Donkersloot. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Edward, Viola, Teresa, Alan, Christopher, Sonya, Arthur, Joshua (Jo-Anna), Matthew (Rachelle), Jordan (Gillian), Andrew, Patricia (Bradley), Douglas, Amy; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Meagan, Clyde, Caleb, Emily; and one sister Helen.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband: Jacob (1992); six children: Ronald (1958), John (2008), Tina (2009), Mary (2009), Sue (2010), Jake (2015); seven brothers and three sisters.

Mom, “You have finished the race, you have kept the faith. Now there is in store for you the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will award to you.” 2 Timothy 4:7.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Psalm 116:15

The family would like to thank Dr. Kaethler, Chaplin Larry Hirst and all the wonderful nurses, health care aides, and volunteers at Bethesda Place for loving Mom and taking care of her these last five years.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, Steinbach, MB, with the interment at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.

If people so desire, donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to the Steinbach Mennonite Church refugee fund, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach, MB, R5G 0L1.
