VICTORIA MANDZY
Oct. 22, 1921-Dec. 5, 2015

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the peaceful passing of Victoria Mandzy on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015.

She was born to the late Alex and Helen Mandzy on Oct. 22, 1921, the second of four children.

Victoria was predeceased by her parents, brother Anton, and sisters Stephie and Mary (in infancy).

She was born and lived on the family farm in Stuartburn, leaving home at the age of 14 to live with an aunt in Winnipeg, due to poor health. Here she worked as a maid for three German families, the last being the Gauer family with three growing boys. Victoria spoke fondly of her time spent with these three boys, their antics and such.

She went on to work as a seamstress making buttonholes in a cubicle at The Bay. It was here that a manager approached her and offered her a job with the company, a career that spanned over 40 years of loyal service.

Her weekends were spent helping out on the family farm, taking the Grey Goose Bus to Stuartburn every Friday and back to Winnipeg every Monday morning.

Victoria enjoyed crocheting, gardening, playing bingo, partaking of a shot of brandy, and most of all she loved to read. The Free Press was read from cover to cover as were the many magazines she subscribed to. Voting was an important civic duty she insisted on and enjoyed engaging people in discussions of politics. It was important for her to be neighbourly and with her easy, outgoing nature Victoria made friends easily.

She was a kind and generous person, donating to many charities, sometimes more than once in a year if she felt this was necessary. When it came to tax time the accountants always shook their heads as she usually had more than 100 separate donations that had to be entered.

The past 20 months were difficult for Vicky, mourning the loss of her sister Steffie and experiencing declining health. Missing Steffie, coupled with hospitalization, left her feeling lonely. Her caregivers became an extended family as did some of the patients whom she formed friendships with. When she moved to Rest Haven Nursing Home in February 2015, she thrived in her new surroundings, socializing and making friends, as well as the ongoing devotion and friendship she had in Bev and Danny and their family.

Her strength was independence and to never be a burden to anyone.

Sincerest gratitude goes out to Dr Gordon Dyck for his care of Victoria over the years she lived in her own home, as well as to Dr Porath and the staff of Rest Haven Nursing Home for their compassionate care in the last months of her life.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Church, Stuartburn. The viewing will take place at the church following the service. The burial will follow at the Parish Cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Victoria may be made to the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church or The Haven Group (Rest Haven Nursing Home).
