Jake Friesen
March 10, 1942 – October 24, 2015

Our father, Jake Friesen, was born on March 10, 1942 to Jake G. and Helen Friesen in Steinbach, MB. He grew up with three sisters, Helen, Mary, and Betty, on the farmstead in Kleefeld, MB.

On July 29, 1962, in Steinbach, he was united in marriage with our mother, Helen Martens, with whom he shared 53 years of love, hardships, and triumphs.

After their marriage, Mom and Dad lived in Kleefeld, where two sons and a daughter were born. Then in 1975, they moved to Steinbach, where the two youngest were born.

Dad was a hard worker who pushed on despite hardships and injuries for the sake of his family. Where upon in 1986, a severe accident took him out of the workforce. In spite of the struggles of adjusting to early retirement, Dad developed other abilities and talents such as doing much of the cooking at home. Many of us strove to make soups like Dad did but rarely succeeded. When asked what was his recipe the reply was, “Oh it’s a bit of this and that.”

Another leisure he enjoyed was taking the family fishing and camping. Even in his last year here with us he possessed a fishing license in the hopes he would go fishing again.

In 2009, a massive heart attack altered his life yet again. In all the health challenges he faced, Dad grew to know Jesus in a real profound way. We witnessed many changes in him, one of which was peacefulness about him. Another significant change we saw was Dad saying grace at our Thanksgiving meal we had just enjoyed together the previous weekend to his passing.

He loved being in church whenever he could, but his declining quality of life made attending more and more of a challenge.

Left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Helen, son Jake (Doris) Friesen of Steinbach, MB, son Ed (Sarah) Friesen of Winnipeg, daughter Tammy (Layton) Hiebert of Pansy, MB, son Jeremy (Shelley) Friesen of Saskatoon, SK, daughter Jolene Kornelsen of Landmark, MB, 22 grandchildren and their spouses, and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jake and Helen Friesen, his sister Helen and her husband Johnny Voth, and his granddaughter Jackie-Lynn.

The viewing will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 7:00 p.m., with devotional at 7:30 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. There will also be a time of viewing at the church prior to the funeral service.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Southland Church, Steinbach, MB. Burial will follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to assist the family with funeral expenses.
