LARRY VOGT
October 24, 1954 - October 21, 2015

On October 21, 2015, Larry Dennis Vogt of Mitchell, MB, passed away, just days away from his 61st birthday. He is survived by: his mother Susan Zacharias (Ike Zacharias); partner Debbie Antonation; daughter Lisa Vogt (Jack Rach), with children Jonas, Mathew and Livia; son Derek Vogt (Jacqueline Balingcos), with children Joel and Rachel; and son Jared Vogt (Jodi Giesbrecht); as well as three sisters: Ella (Leonard) Sawatzky, Jeanne (Henry) Schulz and Shiela (Brian) Harder; three brothers: Ray (Dora) Vogt, Marvin (Marlene) Vogt and Danny (Sharon) Vogt and their families. He was predeceased by his father David Vogt in 1989.

Larry was a part of the local building industry for 40 years and was the owner of Vogt Building Construction in Steinbach. He first learned the building trade by swinging a hammer alongside his father and he worked hard to build his company up through the years. He prided himself on personal touches, a good eye for detail, colors and craftsmanship. He loved the creativity of the work, serving clients and working together with a close group of trades. In the notes he wrote for us earlier this month he said “To the construction industry – Thank you for the work and the creative stimulation it provided. Thanks to all the great reliable employees and sub-trades throughout the years. Carry on guys. Look after the customer and they will look after you.”

In 1977, Larry married Rosemary Suderman and they had three children. Larry liked to stay active as much as possible. In the summer he liked boating and camping with family and friends and going for drives. In the winter he enjoyed snowmobiling and going to hockey games. When he was at home, he stayed busy by working on the yard. Planting flowers and landscaping brought him a lot of joy over the years. He also loved spending time with his five grandchildren.

In recent years, Larry began spending time with a very special woman named Debbie Antonation. He was starting to semi-retire and wanted to see a bit more of the world. But a diagnosis of prostate cancer got in the way of these dreams. Larry adapted himself to this new reality and showed an amazing amount of strength. With Debbie as strong support, he fought with tooth and nail against the disease and wanted so much to live.

On the evening of October 21, 2015, Larry took his last breath, surrounded by loved ones. Letting go of Larry is one of the hardest things we will ever do. We take comfort in the words he wrote his mother just a few weeks ago: “Where Jesus leads, I shall follow.”

The funeral service for Larry Vogt will be held on his birthday, October 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. Donations in memory of Larry Vogt may be made to Habitat for Humanity in Steinbach, Box 20115, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1R6.
