BURTON LOEWEN
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Burton Loewen, loving husband, father, and grandfather, on August 25, 2015 at 73 years of age.
Burton is predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret Loewen and is mourned by his wife, Karen (Kroeker), son John and his wife Kim (Jesse, Timaya, Shandy, and Riley), son Mark and his wife Dana (Alexandra and Miles), and daughter Sarah and her husband Sheldon Neufeld (Johanna and Carson). Also remembering Burt will be his three sisters, in-laws, and his nieces and nephews.
Burt was born on September 14, 1941, and grew up in Steinbach, MB. He graduated from Steinbach Collegiate and went to work for the Royal Bank, then for his father, eventually taking over the family retail business which later became Steinbach Furniture. Burt was married to Karen Kroeker on September 25, 1964. Family was always very important to Burt and he loved to take family ski trips to the mountains, trips to Mexico, Europe, and spent lots of time at the family cottage (which he built) at Buffalo Point. He enjoyed working with his hands, developing hobbies that included motorcycles, sailing, flying, building an airplane, restoring British collector cars (LBC's) and antique tractors. He was also a lifelong learner, attending higher education classes and reading voraciously on topics ranging from motorcycle repair to Mennonite history.
Through the store, he spent forty years developing business and personal relationships, something that he deeply enjoyed. Burt was an influential member of the Steinbach business community and church community. He loved to help others and give back to his community using his finance and business skills to guide many young business people, and serving for many years on local boards, and volunteering in many organizations such as Providence College, Steinbach Christian School, Eden East, the EMC conference, Steinbach Chamber of Commerce, and the Mennonite Heritage Museum. Earlier, he was also involved on the Hanover School Division board of trustees, and served on his church board of trustees for many years.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Health Sciences Centre and Bethesda Hospital for the exceptional care that Dad received.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., at Steinbach EMC.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Burton Loewen can be made to Eden East, 21 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach, MB R5G 0L4 (cheques payable to Eden Founcation), Providence University College, 10 College Crescent, Otterburne, MB R0A 1G0 and/or Steinbach Christian School, 50 PTH 12N, Steinbach, MB R5G 1T4.
