AUDREY HELEN TOEWS
(nee Fast)
July 30, 1937 – June 29, 2015
Peacefully, with her family at her side, Audrey Helen Toews (nee Fast), passed away on Monday, June 29, 2015 at her residence. We were fortunate as her family, to care for her at home during her lengthy illness.
She is survived by Ernie, her husband of 53 years, her son Mike (Sandra), daughter Karen (Rod), and her grandchildren: Aaron (Kim), Sam, Siobhan, and Liam.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Anna Fast, her brother Ray and sister-in-law Joan Fast, her brother Jim Fast and nephews Brent Peters and Wayne Fast.
Mom was born on July 30, 1937 in Steinbach, Manitoba. Mom attended high school in Steinbach and then briefly after working at the bank, she entered the Misericordia School of Nursing in 1959. Mom married Dad in 1962 and then after four years as an operating room nurse at Bethesda Hospital, she moved on to her true passion- raising a family.
Mom enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, knitting, quilting, and scrapbooking. Mom was also very involved with the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum and spent countless hours working on quilts and genealogies. Mom was an incredible cook and loved nothing more than planning and having her family over for large meals. After these meals, she always wanted to sit and visit while Dad cleaned up. She was always interested in what her family was doing.
Mom had a strong faith which carried her through her long illness. Her church was very important to her having spent many hours working as hospitality convener at the EMB Church, now Cornerstone. To her last days she was very concerned about the spiritual wellbeing of her entire family.
We wish to thank Debbie and Dr. Curtis Krahn for their care and making it possible for Mom to remain at home in her last days. Also thanks to Dr. Darren Reimer and the staff at the Steinbach Community Cancer Program.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 162 Hwy 52 W, Steinbach, MB, with reception to follow. A private burial will take place prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Audrey may be made to Southern Health/ Santé Sud (In cheque memo line: Steinbach Community Cancer Program), Southern Health/Santé Sud (In cheque memo line: Palliative Care Program), or Mennonite Heritage Village.
