Mom was born on September 29, 1929 on the family farm near Hochstadt, MB. She attended the Hochstadt one room school house where she met the man she would ultimately marry. He was in Grade 8 while she was in Grade 1. She married Jake Topnik on June 10th,1949. Jake and Elsie worked on their farm near Kleefeld for 46 years until retiring and moving to Steinbach in 1995.
She enjoyed many aspects of farm life especially gardening, growing flowers, raising chickens, gathering eggs, painting houses, selling strawberries, baking and enjoying family life on the farm. Besides working on the farm, Elsie also worked at a few fabric stores in Steinbach. Her expertise with both fabric and sewing were an asset to many people. She was involved in many organizations including church groups, TOPS, bowling, projects for the needy, and volunteering at Bethesda Hospital.
She met many people through her interests such as walking, camping, knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, baking, cooking, and playing various games. Elsie’s involvement and total dedication to her whole family was greatly appreciated and will be dearly missed.
Elsie’s last 4 years were particularly challenging with her various health issues. Her strong faith and determination together with her positive attitude and great sense of humour helped all of us as she went through this journey. Although you are gone Elsie, you will live on in the hearts and memories of your family and the many other lives you have touched.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr Karen Toews, the staff of Steinbach Cancer Care, and the staff on Main Floor at Bethesda Hospital for all the support and care over the past years.
