ALBERT HENRY HANSON
Born on November 16, 1917 to Augusta and Per Gustav Hanson, Albert grew up in Sprague, Manitoba. He passed away peacefully on September 15, 2014 at Bethesda Personal Care Home, Steinbach.
He is survived by: his loving wife, Emma and stepchildren: Sylvia Nilsson-Barkman (Sid Barkman), and Leland Nelson (Stephanie); grandchildren: Shelley Appleton (Ray), Jodi Nelson, Sidney Barkman Jr (Heather), Andrea Conlin (Paul), and Erika Dlugokecki (Alex); and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are his sisters-in-law: Rose Hanson of Atikokan, ON, Elsa Hanson and Dorothy Norlund, both of Rainy River, ON; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Being the youngest in his immediate family, Albert was predeceased by his parents, brothers: Hjalmar, Everet, Herbert and Harold; and sisters: Gertrude Burns, Eleanor Bertrand and Ellen Stamler. He was also predeceased by his stepson Lenart Nelson and nephews: Ray Utterstrom, Herbert Hanson Jr, and Robert Stamler.
Albert's work life began on the family farm and in his father's logging business. He served for a short time in the Canadian Army, moved to Kamloops, BC in the late 1940's and to Atikokan, ON in 1953, where he was employed by the CNR. He returned to Sprague in 1962 to work at Columbia Forest Products. Albert studied to earn his Stationary Engineer certificate and was employed at the mill until it closed in 1970. He moved on to enjoy outdoor work at the Provincial Park at Moose Lake where he supervised the grounds crew. Albert retired in 1982.
Emma and Albert often spoke affectionately of their time together. They travelled across North America and also made a trip to Sweden to find relatives. In 2002, the family home in Sprague flooded and Albert and Emma moved to Steinbach. Albert enjoyed telling stories of the past, nature, walking and maintaining the yard until 2010 when he was admitted to Bethesda Personal Care Home suffering with Alzheimer's Disease. Emma faithfully visited him until she joined him there in 2014. Through all his days, Albert loved life and all who came to know him loved him. He was a supportive husband, a caring father, a favourite uncle and always a helpful neighbour. He will be missed.
Many thanks to the staff at Bethesda Place for their exceptional care and compassion.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach. Burial will follow at the Sprague Cemetery.
