AGNES WIEBE
Agnes Wiebe was born in Alexandrakron, Russia on March 9, 1924 to Jacob and Sara Wiebe. She immigrated to Canada with her parents and one older sister at a very young age.
Her parents settled on a farm in southeastern Manitoba, where she received her elementary education. After completing grade 11, she was given a permit teaching position in the school district of Morray, the school district where she grew up. She commuted from Steinbach, about 10 miles, often walking a part of the way because of road conditions. It was a two-room school and she taught grades 1 to 3. She enjoyed the year and said she had good students. The following year she worked in the Royal Bank in Steinbach for one year. After this year she went to business college in Winnipeg. Her first major career was at the Red River Health Unit for the Department of Health. She enjoyed this work and often wondered whether she should go into nursing. After some urging by the nurses with whom she worked, she went to take an "Operating Room Technicians Course", which was taught at The Health Sciences Centre. After taking the course she was very sure she would not be a nurse.
When she came back to Steinbach she was given a position with the Department of Agriculture and this work became her vocation. Here she made many friends and was highly respected as an agricultural secretary. Since her vocation was now set, she had more time to pursue her other interests. One of her interests was traveling.
She went on a number of music tours to Europe with the Howard Dycks, meeting and making new friends.
Another interest she developed was golf. This became a passion for her. She would golf from early spring to late fall and go with anyone who wanted to golf. She golfed as long as she could walk. The last while she could only do nine holes.
Golfing came to an end when she went for a test to the hospital and fell in the hospital and broke her hip. It was at this time that she was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. She sold her home and moved into Assisted Living. She loved her place in Bridgepark Manor and would have loved to stay there, but her strength limited her activities and she was admitted to the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach where she passed away on June 17, 2014.
She leaves to mourn: one sister Elsie (Tony), four nephews: Roy (Michelle) in Ottawa, Tim (Sara) in Montreal, Murray in Winnipeg, and Rob (Anne) in Oakville; six great-nephews and nieces: Derek and Daria in Winnipeg and their mother Shelley, Ellyn and Rebecca in Montreal, and Tess and Molly in Oakville. She was predeceased by her sister Lydia, her brother Jac, and her parents Jacob and Sara.
We wish to thank the Bethesda Hospital staff for their care and compassion.
We also wish to thank her many friends for the close contact they kept with her on her difficult journey.
Agnes will be missed by many.
The memorial service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, MB. Ash interment prior to the service at Memorial Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
