It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Metro “Matt” Pete Alexiuk on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Bethesda Hospital, Steinbach, Manitoba.
Remaining to forever cherish Matt’s memory are: his wife Loraine, children: Darryl (Shelley), Karen, Lionel, Harley (Beverley), and Blaine (Ronda); grandchildren: Erin (Marc), Brooke, Avery, Erik and Luke; great-grandchildren: Baylee and Hunter; brothers: Paul (Pat), Andy (Edith), Phil (Marlene); sisters: Jean (Ed), and Nettie; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Lena; brothers: John and Eli; sister Mary, brother-in-law Pete Yarmie; sisters-in-law: Dorothy and Marion Alexiuk; nephew Allen and niece Kelly.
Matt was born on the family farm in Sundown, Manitoba on April 25, 1928. He married Loraine (Golinowski) on May 31, 1958 and together they raised their family. Matt was a man of many talents. He worked as a mechanic, pipefitter, and a carpenter. Matt could fix anything and taught his children to do the same. This confidence to “fix anything” led Matt to many auction sales near and far – with many “good deals” brought home.
Matt was a hardworking man and he loved his family. He loved to give advice and chat over a cup of coffee. Even with his recent fragile health, Matt still found the energy to go for coffee with Blaine to catch up on the news. He loved to socialize and his laughter and advice will be will be forever missed by his family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ilchyna, home care, paramedics and doctors at Bethesda Hospital Emergency Room for their care and compassion.
The funeral service for Matt Alexiuk will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. The viewing will be held at the chapel prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Matt may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association (MB Branch) or St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Sundown.
