SUSANNA SCHMIDT HEINRICHS

On May 1, 2014 at the age of 102 Mom went home to be with her Lord and Saviour whom she had been waiting to meet for a long time. Many times during her last days she was reaching her hands up to heaven.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Mary (John) Janzen, Harry (Grace) Schmidt, Clara (Dave) Rempel, Harvey (Laura) Schmidt, son-in-law Norman Friesen, 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren, 5 stepchildren and their families.

She was predeceased by her first husband Peter Schmidt in 1978, her second husband Henry Heinrichs in 1999, her daughter Martha in 2013, 1 grandson and 2 great grandchildren.

Mom was born on March 20, 1912 to John G. and Susanna Rempel. Her mother passed away when she was only 2 weeks old. Shortly thereafter her dad married Anna Wiebe Derksen, a widow who also had a little girl. They went on to have 7 more children together with one passing away in infancy.

She and Dad, Peter Schmidt, were married on June 28, 1934. During their time together they lived in Edenburg, Sommerfeld, and Steinbach. Mom loved all aspects of being a wife and mother. Cooking, cleaning and sewing were all very enjoyable to her and she often sang while she worked. Her Christmas and Easter meals were usually three meals in one with enough made for us to take home some moos or soup. The afghans, blankets and slippers she made are still keeping us warm. Her hands were always busy and no fabric scraps went to waste. She had a gift of changing things that didn’t suit her fancy. If the sweater doesn’t have pockets; make some, if the buttons are the wrong color; change them, if the stockings are the wrong color; dye them with tea, no problem. Mom also spent time praying for her family and others. People going through tough times were on her prayer list morning and evening. Mom had been baptized upon the profession of her faith in Jesus Christ and lived her life accordingly.

After being widowed for 3 years she married Henry Heinrichs on August 16, 1981 and moved to Altona. They enjoyed 18 years of travelling and visiting family and friends together.

The family would like to thank the Eastview staff for the compassionate care they gave Mom in her last years.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Altona, MB. Interment took place at the Memorial Cemetery in Steinbach, MB.

Memorial donations may be made to the Eastview Place Chaplaincy program.
