SARA PETERS

Sara Peters, 91, of Grunthal, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Grunthal Menno Home, Grunthal, MB.

Sara was born to Johann and Margareta Peters on April 15, 1922 in Gnadental on the Molotschna Colony in what is now Ukraine. She immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1925.
The family originally settled in Glenlea, Manitoba but moved to Grunthal in 1931 where Sara lived for the remainder of her life. In earlier times, when her family still kept livestock, Sara enjoyed caring for the animals and thought of them all as her pets.
She attended school until Grade 8, but her education was limited due to her poor eyesight. Nevertheless, she loved poetry and music and committed much of it to memory.
After the family built their new home in 1948, Sara worked in the beet fields – hoeing weeds during the summer and topping beets at harvest – to help pay for the house.
When her nieces and nephews were younger, Sara was a loving and dependable caregiver to them.
Sara spent a significant part of her life caring for her widowed mother who died in 1985. She and her widowed sister, Margaret, then lived together in the family home and later in the Menno Home until Margaret’s death in 2010.
Sara will be remembered for her creativity, a sly sense of humor and for her fierce loyalty to those she loved.

She is survived by her sisters Jessie (Henry) Peters and Mary Enns, her nieces and nephews : Eric Peters, Vic Peters, Ed Peters, Clara Sawatsky, Harold Peters, Irene Enns, John Enns, Peter Enns, Arlene Unruh, John Franz and their families.

Viewing will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Grunthal Elim Church with burial to follow at Grunthal Cemetery.
