NETTIE FUNK (nee Thiessen)
December 3, 1936 – February 18, 2014
Our Mom, Nettie was born to parents John and Aganetha Thiessen on December 3, 1936 in Rosenfeld, Manitoba. Her growing years were spent on a farm in Roseau River, Manitoba. Mom enjoyed going to school, reading poetry, had a love of singing and picking wild flowers.
Mom was baptised upon confession of her faith in Jesus Christ and lived her life for the Lord. Even through her painful illness, she had a peaceful and gentle spirit.
Mom married the love of her life Bill Funk on June 5, 1955. They spent their first married years in Roseau River area, moving to different locations until they moved to Vita where they farmed and continued to raise their family. Mom and Dad raised their children in a Christian home. Mom believed in the power of prayer and she diligently prayed for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mom taught Sunday school in her children’s formative years. In their retirement, Mom and Dad spent many years serving in Bible camps in Roseau River, Turtle Mountain, Carberry, Beaver Lake, and Gimli. They had a burden for children to learn of Jesus’ love.
Mom struggled many years with diabetes and Parkinson’s. Then on February 18, 2014, Mom passed away peacefully after a five month battle with bone cancer.
She leaves to mourn her beloved husband of 58 years, Bill Funk, one son and three daughters: Elma Unrau (George), Barbra Penner (Jake), Jake Funk (Mary) and Elizabeth Banman (Alvin); 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and expecting one more great-grandchild in July. She also leaves to mourn three sisters and three brothers.
She was predeceased by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt Thank-you to the staff at the Bethesda Hospital, for the love and care they gave Mom. Also for everyone who visited and prayed for Mom and her family.
The funeral service was held Saturday, February 22, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roseau River Bible Camp, where children learn about Jesus!
