CORNELIUS PENNER PLETT

Cornelius Penner Plett was born on January 10, 1918, to John and Margaretha Plett, half of one of their four pairs of twins, and the ninth of 17 surviving children. At age two, the family moved from their home near Giroux to their new farm near Willow Ridge. Dad started school in Ile des Chenes and continued at Willow Ridge once the school there was completed.

Dad met Margaret Kroeker in his late teens, and their love blossomed into marriage on June 25, 1939. They were blessed with, and are survived by nine children, five boys and four girls: Marina (Ben) Wiebe, Ray (Julia) Plett, Viola (Winston) Penner, Lloyd (Marilyn) Plett, Gladys (Sid) Reimer, Karen (Cornie) Loeppky, Grant (Celia) Plett, Dayton (Viola) Plett, and Rick (Monica) Plett, as well as 28 grandchildren and their families. Dad is also survived by sisters Annie Schultz, Helen Funk, Katie Hildebrand; sister-in-law Mary Plett and brother-in-law George Neufeld.

Dad was pre-deceased by his wife Margaret, and by his second wife Olga.

Dad was a hard worker and faithful provider for his family, despite hard times. Besides working in lumber camps and on his parents’ and later their own farm, Dad was also usually a wage earner with employers including Allan Penner Lumber Yard, Arctic Ice, Borger Construction, WW Construction, and then for many years as a Hanover School Division bus driver. He was much beloved by all his student-passengers.

While working in the lumber camps as a young man, Dad accepted Jesus as his Savior. He was a life-long member at Prairie Rose EM Church, did many practical and often inconspicuous jobs there, and though never officially elected as such, in many ways served as a deacon ‘without portfolio’. He took a keen interest in many missionaries, especially those who were his nephews and nieces.

During his retirement years Dad enjoyed his many building projects which included lawn swings, picnic benches and tables, and wishing wells, all of which got more and more colorful in recent years. Dad was a friend to all and had time for everyone. No job or task was ever too important to drop immediately so that he could take time for coffee and conversation; more recently at increasing volume.

We are grateful that Dad was able to stay in his apartment to the very end, but we realize that this was made possible and enjoyable for him through the help of many wonderful neighbours and dear friends. Thank-you so much to so many of you who were part of his large circle of friends.

Dad passed away in his home with family at his side on Sunday afternoon, February 2, 2014.

We can easily imagine his Saviour greeting him at heaven’s gates, saying “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord!” (Mt. 25:2).
