PETER F. GIESBRECHT

Peter F. Giesbrecht passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the age of 94.
He is survived by his beloved wife Agatha of 69 years, children: Dick (Lorna), Norm, Dave (Eleanor), Grace (Larry), Don (Lorraine), Joyce (Harv), Allan (Diane), and Lil (Lex); 25 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, sisters: Tina Harder, Nettie (Nick David), Annie (Pete Warkentine), Mary (Palmer Ruten), Susan, Helen; and brother Frank (Helen).

He was predeceased by his daughter Emily in infancy, his grandson Gregory in infancy and his daughter-in-law Marlene in 2011.

He was born June 9, 1919 to Frank and Aganetha. He grew up on the family farm in New Bothwell. On April 23, 1944, he married Agatha (Friesen) and they made their home a few miles west of New Bothwell. Dad farmed and worked as a cabinet maker and finish carpenter. In 1979, they sold the family farm and moved to Mitchell, continuing to work on a variety of finish carpentry projects including upgrades and repairs on many of his children's homes. He installed many a door! In 2006, they moved to a senior’s complex in Steinbach where he lived until his passing.

Dad had a good sense of humour and loved to play with words. He taught his children values such as honesty, hard work, and that money does not grow on trees. More importantly, he taught his children the value of Faith and Trust in God. On December 29, 2013, at his last Christmas family gathering on earth, he stood in front of the family and read the Christmas story from the Bible. Christmas was not Christmas for him without Christ in it.

Dad was very committed to looking after Mom and when her health began to fail his top priority was to look after her. He faced this challenge "head-on" with commitment and never looked for an easy way out. On Thursday, January 16, 2014, he was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and passed away in the early morning hours of January 18, 2014.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach. Public viewing at 10:00 a.m. preceding the service. Interment will follow at Niverville Hespeler Cemetery after the service and lunch.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Dad's favourite charities, Union Gospel Mission, Box 1073 Stn. Main, Winnipeg, MB. R3C 2X4.
