TED SLUSARCYK

It is with overwhelming sadness that we, the family of Ted Slusarcyk, announce the passing of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. At the age of 88, Ted died peacefully with his family at his side at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013.

He leaves to mourn his five children, Gary (Myrna), Wanda, Lenny (Crystal), Larry (Kim) and Sandy (Jeff), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brothers Emil and Fred, his sister Janet, and all his nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Therese (Cote) in 2010, his parents John and Victoria, his brother Eddy, sisters Emily and Jean, and grandson Todd.

Ted was born in Poland on Sept. 1, 1925. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1927 where they settled on a parcel of land near Vassar, MB. In his young days he was a real crack shot. He hunted squirrels and sold the pelts and then continued on to trapping muskrats. By the time he was 16 he had saved enough money to buy his first vehicle.

As a young adult, he met the love of his life (Therese) and at the age of 22 they married. Ted’s early careers included his own logging business in Whitemouth Lake and grain farming in Piney, MB. In 1960, the family settled in Vassar, MB and shortly after he began log hauling out of Kenora. In 1972, Ted and Therese moved their family to Kenora, ON where Ted continued his trucking career. As an owner/operator, Ted eventually employed his two sons, Gary and Lenny, at which time he semi-retired.

Ted and Therese bought property on Lake of the Woods and built their dream home. In 1982, they moved to their home on Storm Bay Road where Ted lived until he was 87 years old. Family gatherings were a big part of Ted and Therese’s life from the moment they wed and throughout their 63 years of marriage. Their leisure time consisted of outings on the lake, family visits and road trips to the States.

First and foremost, Ted loved his family. Secondly, he liked company and a good conversation. He also enjoyed being on the lake and fishing, and he lived to work. He “retired” at an early age, but he never really stopped working. He enjoyed fixing things, anything and everything. He was always there to lend a helping hand and offer some great advice.

Ted thought of himself as a private man, but in reality he made friends everywhere he went. He was well known for his storytelling and his vast knowledge of people and places.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends, but never forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lake of the Woods Hospital, Palliative Care would be appreciated.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr Workman, Lynn Mychalyshyn, Jan Landsiedel, Marg Tella and the nursing team on the 2nd East ward.

The funeral will take place on Thursday, Oct. 3 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. Prayers and visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, with the service beginning at 12 noon. There will be a reception following the service.

Online condolences may be made at www.brownfuneralhomekenora.com.

Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre entrusted with arrangements.
