October 28, 2013 Elvina (Toews) Loewen, 93, died at Niverville Heritage Personal Care Home. Elvina was born in Steinbach on June 11, 1920 to Amelia Borkowsky and Klaas Toews on a farm that is now the Mennonite Heritage Museum. Elvina made taking care of her family her career.
Elvina married Dave Loewen on August 16, 1942 at the E.M.B. Church in Steinbach; he predeceased her in August 2011. Elvina is survived by their children Russ (Marilyn) of Winnipeg, Wayne (Kathy) of Winnipeg, Sharon (Tom Prochnow) of Gilbert, Iowa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Sara Prochnow Ojard (Nels), Evelyn, Thomas; David (Dawn) Prochnow, Noah; Jonathan (Emily) Prochnow, Owen, Nora; Shea Loewen; Carlisle (Leona) Wright, Daryn, Addison; sister Rose of Seattle, Dave's siblings numerous nieces and nephews.
Elvina was a member of the E.M.B. Church (Cornerstone), spending many hours in the kitchen making potato salad and coffee.
Elvina's greatest joy in life was taking care of people, and she spent her whole life as a caregiver, starting with quitting school at 16 when her mom died to take care of her youngest sister Romelda and continuing with her children and sisters as they became elderly. An avid quilter, her family will be warmed by her quilts and the memories she gave them in the years ahead. She and Dave spent many hours in the last years remembering a life filled with faith, family, and friends.
Elvina was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Elizabeth, Minna, Ann, John, Mina, Marie and Romelda. Dave's siblings have also been a big part of her life.
Having Romelda be a big part of her life, aim was always concerned with those with mental disabilities and the family requests memorials to Kindale Industries or Envision Community Living.
The memorial service will be held Thursday, October 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, with interment prior to the service.
