IDA MAY SELMAN
Mom was predeceased by her husband John in 1973, her son David in 1986, and three older brothers who adored her. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Diane and son Bruce (Marilyn), her much-loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mom was born on May 16, 1928 in Winnipeg.
Mom started working at the Bank of Montreal at 17 where she met Dad. After having her children, despite Dad's objections, she was determined to help improve their future. Mom went back to work at the Bank of Montreal and then on to work in sales, market research and finally student records at the University of Manitoba. She forged lifelong friendships with many of her co-workers. Her crazy "Snow White' club enjoyed many girl weekends at the lake. They all had their names, Dopey, Happy, Doc, etc. but of course, she was Snow White.
Mom loved to travel, Hawaii and Bahamas were her favourite stops. She moved into Kirchhoff Gardens in 1990 where she reconnected with Art Murphy, an old family friend. They became a couple and after a trip to Vegas we spent far too much time chasing the elusive "BIG WIN" in a variety of casinos near and far. She appreciated the many friendships she made at Kirchhoff Gardens and was incredibly happy there.
Mom treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren. They all have great memories of her antics. Going to the cottage and working on the beach, just like we did. Days were for exploring, swimming, boating and their "favourite" task, picking rocks out of the lake. One of her famous quotes was "if you throw in one stone...you have to take 10 out...and not small ones." This rule applied from the day the cottage was built. Dave, Bruce and I picked our fair share. She could hear a rock getting thrown into the lake a mile away. Then came ... "I heard that, 10 out!" We took out thousands of rocks and Mom and Dad had their rock wall made. To quote a couple of her grandsons... "She was an inspiration and great teacher to those that would listen, and if you didn't - you were threatened with the 'frozen boot' ..., many of us did not!" When the great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren came along she became known as Grandma-the-Great. She loved them more than words can say. They will all miss her hugs, kisses, and $5.00 bills.
We would like to send out a special thank you to Dr. P. G. Mehta. He was devoted to her and went out of his way to see her at home and comfort her. Words cannot express how the family appreciate his compassion and help with everything. Also, a thank you to all of Mom's home care workers. They were all wonderful to her and went above and beyond to care for her.
In keeping with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private gathering will be held later.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

So sad to hear of Ida’s passing. This obituary is beautifully written, rings true with Ida’s spirit, and shows so much love within the family - my sincerest condolences to Diane, Bruce, and all of the grandkids and great-grandkids.
