GAYLE MARGARET SMITH
(nee PAUL / SAVAGE)
April 16, 1935 - July 24, 2020

Peacefully, on July 24, 2020, at the age of 85, Gayle passed away at Vista Park Lodge Nursing Home in Winnipeg.
Predeceased by her husband John Smith in 2015, she leaves to mourn her sister Joan Middler of Vancouver; four children, Clifford Brown (Clemence) of Beausejour, Sandra Brown (Paul) of Winnipeg, James Brown (Jann) of Niagara Falls, ON, and Craig Brown (Chytra) of Vancouver. Gayle has 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Miguel, Hannah, Nick (Shauna), Blaire (Mel), Ryan, Cassandra (Zach), Riley, Mia, Chelone, and Emma; and five great-grandchildren, Kieran, Gracie, Tommy, Conner, and Ripley, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mom was the consummate social butterfly. How fitting that she chose to leave the planet during this pandemic. Social distancing was definitely not her cup of tea! She was a strong, determined, assertive survivor, a most memorable character, who always looked like a million bucks. She faced many challenges in her life and did so with an impressive stoicism. She was a charmer with a penchant for all forms of humour, who could laugh in the face of the most hair raising predicaments. She wrote the book on self care, practiced gratitude and prayer, compassionately helped many in trouble, threw a great party, loved nature, and basically lived to laugh. She was a brilliant cook and a veritable wizard at schmoozing, bingo, and long distance driving.
Gayle's rules for life; Befriend your hairdresser. Share your bingo winnings. Cook ribs individually wrapped in foil, low and slow. Always travel with a fashionable and personable dog. No matter what happens in life, dress well, have a functional get away car, and keep laughing.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Vista Park Lodge Nursing Home who made Mom's last few months very comfortable.
The family will have a private Celebration of Life in the near future.

God, grant me the Serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
and Wisdom to know the difference.

  • Gayle was truly a woman of class, who without a doubt, indeed, was unsurpassed in the refinement of tasty ribs. She was also a master in the department of laughter, illustrated as follows: Gayle and John loved the soft ice cream offered at the Banana Boat on Osborne. During one of their frequent visits to Winnipeg, I momentarily exited my spendthrift shell and offered to pay for the treats for our small group. As we sat enjoying the ice cream, Gayle gazed up at me stating, “ Oh, didn’t I tell you, I won $5000 at bingo last night!” Of course, Gayle laughed uncontrollably! R.I.P.
