MARGARET HELEN MURPHY
(nee O'LAUGHLIN)
January 8, 1923 - November 2, 2020

Margaret Helen Murphy died at the age of 97, the morning of November 2, 2020.
Margaret was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Predeceased by her parents and brothers; she leaves three daughters, Diane Roussin (Gerry) Barbara Murphy and Jan Murphy (Gilles Ouellette). Blessed with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, she will be deeply missed by those who loved her.
Margaret was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and was a longtime member of the CWL and The Children of Mary. She never lost her desire for learning and successfully graduated from university with her BA at the age of 59 having completed more courses than could be counted. She also acquired a Bronze Certificate from Toastmasters International. Her second love was singing. We all knew her favourite songs and she was a proud member of The Bluenose Belles sharing her talents as she went along. In the later years she loved to play bridge. Many miles were travelled to visit grandchildren and all have special memories of when Grandma came to stay.
Many thanks to the nurses and health care workers at Meadowood Manor for their love and care.
Celebrations of Margaret's life will take place in both Winnipeg and Halifax, at dates to be determined.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Margaret was a thoughtful and very caring individual. She was my mother’s best friend, Mary ( Murphy ) White. I recall many times mom and Margaret would get together. Lots of reminiscing. Very dear friends. Margaret and mom kept in touch until she passed away in 2015. A memory I have is when I was about to leave mom, after a visit, she would ask me to dial Margaret’s number. I would wait until Margaret answered. I know they spoke for an hour or more. - Posted by: Tim White (Friend) on: Dec 05, 2020

  • My heartfelt condolences to family and friends of "Auntie Margaret". I was the chief babysitter of the three girls in my teens and I never turned down a job at the Murphy's on Victory Place were the first people I knew who had a T.V.! Our lives overlapped again in later years when we lived in Nova Scotia just before she moved back to Winnipeg. So many memories...Our loss is Heaven's gain. - Posted by: Theresa (Murphy) Burke (Niece ) on: Nov 28, 2020

  • I am so saddened by this news and wish to offer my condolences to all of you. I have so many memories of your Mom : your house on Victory Place, our Murphy Boxing Day parties, her infectious laugh, never a hair out of place, her amazing memory and her endless curiosity. I loved listening to her stories of Nova Scotia when I was young and do remember how excited she would get when she could go for a visit. I am not sure how old she was when mastered the use of her computer but I was so impressed when I received my first email from her. I remember thinking that I hope to be just like my dear Godmother when I “grow up”!! Sending big hugs to all of you Maureen - Posted by: Maureen Kalansky (Godaughter/niece ) on: Nov 22, 2020

  • My deepest condolences. I knew Margaret when she lived and volunteered at Fred Tipping. Margaret volunteered to look after cards here, and I don't think she ever forgot anyone from birthdays, get well etc. I know your dear mother will be solely missed by all of you. - Posted by: gail hill (friend) on: Nov 09, 2020

  • I am sorry for your loss girls. That's the way I remember the three of you from the days we would gather around your t.v. to watch American Bandstand. Your family was the only one who got the American channel and your Mother very graciously allowed a gaggle of us girls to go over after school and watch as a group. My memory of your Mom is of her in her Brownie uniform going to lead her group. She was very petite and never had a hair out of place whenever I saw her. She used to make me think of Doris Day. I found comfort in reading your memories of my Mom when she passed Barb and hope that mine will do the same for you and Diane and Jan. Sincerely, Diana - Posted by: Diana Edwards Surbey (Friend) on: Nov 07, 2020
