JAMES ALAN KEMP
March 27, 1947 September 30, 2020
Alan was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy (2004) and Albert (1997), as well as his brother, Brian (2005). Alan is survived by his son, Andrew and his grandson, Ethan, sister-in-law, Valerie and niece, Lynette.
Alan was born and raised in Winnipeg, growing up on Smithfield Avenue in West Kildonan. After graduation from West Kildonan Collegiate, he studied Geology at the University of Manitoba and then completed his degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta. He excelled in all his classes.
He started his career with Atomic Energy of Canada at the Caulk River Facility. He then moved on to the Nuclear Division of Ontario Hydro, Bruce Generating Station, obtaining his Nuclear Station Operating License. After taking early retirement in 2000, Alan then did some consulting work in Ottawa, and later on, contracted with British Nuclear to restart one of the reactors at Bruce Nuclear Station.
Alan worked a couple of farm properties in Tiverton County, and raised cattle in his limited spare time. He was an outdoorsman, camper, hunter, fisherman and loved the isolation and beauty of Canada's great wilderness.
He retired to Vancouver Island, and used that as his base to explore Western Canada. With a tremendous love of wildlife, Alan also found time to volunteer for Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society.
Alan always treasured his dog and took her with him everywhere. If you so wish, donations to your local Humane Society would mean a lot to Alan.
Cremation arrangements entrusted to Comox Valley Funeral Home. Memorial to be determined for a later date.

I have many fond memories of West Kildonan school days and my close friendship with Alan. Alan was my best man when Karin and I were married in 1968. Al always walked his own pathway. He was gentle and kind. May he rest In Peace. - Posted by: Tom Collins (Friend) on: Nov 18, 2020

Al was my good friend at Seal Bay Park, where he was greatly respected. I thought of him as the "mayor" of our little loop. We went for lots of walks around the pond to see the birds, and down to the ocean to see the seals because we could hear them from the campground. I really appreciated his sharp sense of humour and his intelligence and kindness. And he told good stories about his past. He was really good company and I was looking forward to spending time with him as we got older, so I am very sad to hear of his passing. I hope he is in heaven with his beloved dog Alice. - Posted by: Barb S Hunt (friend) on: Nov 15, 2020
