MARGARET ISABEL NORTH
(nee HOBBS)
June 3, 1922 - November 8, 2020

Margaret was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and later moved with her family to Gilbert Plains, Manitoba where she spent her childhood years. Margaret graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba in 1943, and then served with the British Admiralty Technical Mission from June, 1943 until May, 1945. During this time, her future husband Charles Longworth Alton North was serving overseas with the Lord Strathcona's Horse Regiment. On August 9, 1947 Margaret and Alton were married in Carman, Manitoba, Alton's home town, and then went to Toronto where Alton studied optometry. Alton set up his optometric practice in St. James where he practiced for many years. Margaret and Alton chose Woodhaven to raise their family, and their children were blessed with a storybook childhood. Margaret later worked in the Winnipeg Public Library, a job that she loved, until she and Alton moved to Victoria, BC in 1986. The greatest joy in their lives was family. Alton died in 2007, shortly after a large family gathering to celebrate 60 years of his marriage to Margaret. In later years, Margaret enjoyed wonderful weekly family dinners in her home in Victoria that included children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed care packages from Winnipeg.
Margaret is survived by her four children, Dorian (Laurie) of Quadra Island, BC, Richard (Chris) of Winnipeg, Mary of Victoria, BC, and Margie (Brian) of Victoria, BC. Nana is also survived by grandchildren, Ben (Gillian) and Angela (Scott) of Victoria, BC, and Kristian (Maude) of Montreal, QC, great-granddaughters, Eleanor and Beatrice of Victoria, BC, and many treasured nieces and nephews.
