GEORGE SOLYLO
Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 54 years, Beryl Elizabeth (nee Scott) Solylo; children, Dr. Michael Solylo (Rosie), Cynthia Solylo-Kennedy (Dr. Russell Kennedy); and cherished grandchildren, Rachel and Grace Solylo, and Alex and Michael Pasek. George was raised in North End Winnipeg. He was educated by Jesuits at St. Paul's High School and St. Paul's College where he earned a Science degree. He went on to earn degrees in Education from University of Manitoba and Computer Science at University of Calgary. He pursued a lifelong career as a High School Mathematics teacher at St. Francis High School in Calgary, Alberta. Here he and Beryl Elizabeth raised two amazing children. At the same time George maintained a regimen of an active athlete, excelling in sports such as hockey, marathon running, and skiing. He was a volunteer member of Lake Louise Ski Patrol and Ski Friends of Lake Louise for over 20 years.
George was a voracious reader, a student of world history, lover of classic movies, duplicate bridge, and crossword puzzles.
After both children left home and married, George and Beryl Elizabeth moved to New Westminster, BC, and then to Cobble Hill, Vancouver Island, to enjoy retirement. These retirement years were filled with joy as grandparenting and worldwide travel filled the days. He lived a life of faith, cherished family and friendships. Right to the end he appreciated the wonderful life he enjoyed with his loving wife, family and friends. He guided us to become better people, we are so very grateful for the life and time we had together.
Special thanks to Dr. Masuda, Dr. Kapongo, Dr. Reid and home care nurses. The family is grateful to Drew and Peter who delivered tender care at a most difficult time.
A private family service has been held, followed by cremation.
For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George Solylo Tribute Fund at Fraser Academy https://fraseracademy.ca/george-solylo/ in Vancouver, BC.

Dear Beryl, Michael and Rosie and family; Cindy and Russel and family - my family and I are so very saddened to hear George had passed away. A very fine man, husband and father and grandfather to be proud of. Because of distance we lost precious time to spend together as family. One of our special wonderful memories we have was many many years ago visiting with you, George, Michael and Cindy in Calgary and in Banff with George and the ‘kids’. They were cherished times with us and our ‘little’ families at that time. One we have never forgotten! Then again at your beautiful anniversary in Winnipeg at the Hotel Fort Garry. It was so wonderful to now see your beautiful extended family with the grandchildren that were able to be there. So glad we had that chance to be together for at least that celebration of your many years together. We will never forget that time and because of your and George’s generosity in sending the special quilts as a gift in memory of your anniversary. We send our deepest sympathy and love in the loss of a special husband, father and grandfather. I was shocked and saddened to learn of George’s passing. While I knew his health was compromised, I had no idea that his death was imminent. I want to extend my deepest sympathies and condolences to George’s wife Beryl and to his two children, Michael and Cynthia and their families. I met George in September 1956 when we both entered grade 9 at St. Paul’s High School in Winnipeg. We played football and basketball together. (George was a natural athlete.) Although we lived far apart (in Winnipeg terms) – George in the North End and I in St. James – we visited regularly thanks to George’s regular use of his sister Jean’s car. I came to know all of his family members: his Mother and Father and his older sisters, Olga and Jean. George and I would portage into remote lakes in the Whiteshell for spring fishing trips. I was his best man. In later years, whenever I travelled to Calgary in the winter months, I would ski with George in the Banff area. He would lead me to the toughest hills, which he navigated easily and I managed to avoid disaster. He became my best friend at St. Paul’s High School, a relationship that continued until his death. George, you shall be missed greatly. Bill Brown - Posted by: Bill Brown (Best Friend) on: Nov 26, 2020

Dear Elizabeth and family. I was greatly saddened to learn of George's passing from the obituary posted in the Calgary Herald. I knew George from the 17 years he spent volunteering as a ski patroller at Lake Louise. My wife Bonny and I also had the honour of attending Cindy's wedding in Banff. As with many who move away we lost track of George after he retired. However, we fondly remember George as a dedicated, thoughtful, energetic and caring friend and ski patroller who also had a reputation for having a very dry sense of humour. Unfortunately, we have lost several former Lake Louise patrol members recently. Given my history with the group (both past and present) I have assembled a number of photo tributes. I will send you a copy of the one I did for George if you can respond via email - neiljmckendrick@gmail.com - Posted by: Neil McKendrick (Friend, fellow Lake Louise ski patroller) on: Nov 22, 2020
