GAETAN JOSEPH JOYAL
October 2, 1952 - November 11, 2020
Gaetan will be lovingly remembered by his wife Penny; daughter Christine (Chris Rachel); grandson Lucas; sister Margueritte (Josef Kaptein); brother-in-law Tom (Pat MacKichan); as well as numerous friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Therese Mellink and Georges Joyal; and his in-laws, Ian and Margaret MacKichan.
Gaetan was born in Winnipeg and lived his entire life in St. Vital. He attended Dakota Collegiate where he met his future wife, Penny. They were married in 1973. Three years later they built their home on property where his maternal grandparents had been homesteaders.
Throughout his entire life he was a hard worker, and was very meticulous. He also loved the challenge of building, repairing or inventing something, and the finished product was always very rewarding. His career took him from Burns, to installing and maintaining appliances and carwash equipment, to managing a carwash for Big Gallon, then supervising the repairs and maintenance of their locations. When Mohawk Oil bought the company, Gaetan became a district manager; a position he enjoyed immensely for many years. When Christine was a toddler, he realized all the travel away from home no longer suited him, so he and business partner Donald Blais purchased Archibald Mohawk. Gaetan was back in his element maintaining his carwash in tip top shape, and dealing with the business side of the operation. After 21 years, it was time for retirement, so he could enjoy all of his other interests. He was always an avid auto racing fan. He drove two different stock cars at the Winnipeg Speedway, watched Nascar races every weekend, travelled to several Nascar events, and more recently, enjoyed go-kart racing with Lucas, followed by a strawberry sundae. Other favourite past-times included golf, fishing, playing cards, working on projects in his garage, travelling in his motorhome, as well as their family winter vacations with Christine, Chris and Lucas.
The family would like to thank Dr. D. Peretz, Dr. Van Jaarsveldt and all the staff on GA4 at Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion.
If friends desire, a donation to Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian Liver Foundation, or your favourite charity, would be welcome.
A celebration of Gaetan's life will take place at a later date, when it is safe to do so.

I grew up across the street from Joyal’s on Havelock where “Gigi” and I were friends and I have great memories of him as a gentleman even back then. My family moved away, but I ran into him years later at a Husky/Mohawk convention - it was great to catch up. My condolences to all the family. - Posted by: Sue (Hall) Peters (Friend) on: Nov 22, 2020

We will think of your Dad every time we pass by your old cottage Christine. The fabulous boathouse he built years ago is always talked about by our neighbour's son, who purchased the cottage a couple of years ago. We feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to converse with your Dad a few times at family events. He was very welcoming and easy to talk to. Our thoughts are with you Christine and your family. - Posted by: Michael, Vicki and Mike Kostanski (friends) on: Nov 21, 2020
