On November 16, 2020, days after her 96th birthday, our dear friend Marion Gertrude Jackson "Jackie" left us.
She was the daughter of George and Muriel Jackson. After her elementary and secondary education in Dauphin she completed a B.A. degree in History at the University of Manitoba. Her enthusiasm for learning led Marion to secondary school teacher certification at the University of Western Ontario in London. While teaching in Ontario high schools she continued to take university courses, in later years pursuing a Master's degree in Feminist Theology.
In the late 1950s she was recruited by Intervarsity Christian Fellowship to mentor secondary school students in Saskatchewan and university students at UWO and McMaster universities in Ontario. In that role she led 13 Canadian university students on a three month tour through seven countries in Southeast Asia meeting other students, building international goodwill.
The family cabin at Clear Lake fostered Marion's love of nature. That summer community was warmed by her sincere friendship, smile and free spirit.
Her studies and career had her living in various cities in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba, latterly in Brandon. Wherever she went she made friends easily and they were blessed by her warmth and wisdom. She travelled to Woman's' Conferences all over the world: Scandinavia, Hawaii, the North, Australia and Canada.
In her final years of teaching, she fell in love with the north and its people. She taught in Thompson, Hall Beach, Le Pas and lastly Chesterfield Inlet where she worked from Arctic College as an Adult Education Director, providing upgrading courses and instructors for students. One of her final travels was on a supply ship through the Northwest Passage.
She was predeceased by her parents; and brother, Donald.
At a suitable time, family and friends will be invited to celebrate her life. Sincere thanks go to her companion Lisa and the staff on Simkin Centre One, who loved and cared for her during the stress and strain of covid-19.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Marion Jackson was well known in a very small community of Chesterfield inlet where she taught at the Nunavut Arctic College. I loved Marion and often thought of her like she was my grandmother. I often came to see her at the Simkin Place and the look on her face when she saw me was priceless, she was so shocked she said "Miracle" and that broke me into tears. I will truly miss you Marion Jackson, may you rest peacefully in Heaven. Valerie - Posted by: Valerie Ipkarnerk (Friend like a "grandmother/granddaughter") on: Nov 23, 2020

  • I met Jackie at the Simkin Centre about 5 years ago, when my mom was a resident there in the same hallway. It took very little time to realize that Jackie was super special!! Her bright and always happy eyes spoke louder than any voice could. She laughed with them all the time. The times I spent with her were relatively few, but we used to laugh together and I would feel my heart burst when I said something she enjoyed, that made her laugh out loud. Her loving, happy eyes will always be with me in my memory. It is with much sadness that I see that she has gone from us. I hope she knew how much she gave with those eyes of hers...and I hope I can do the same, remembering her example. Many condolences to those family and friends who loved her too. - Posted by: Yvonne Reimer (Friend) on: Nov 21, 2020

  • Jackie was one on my earliest mentors in the Christian Faith. Her passion for God, for the scriptures and for others [especially those on the fringes of the community] have set the bar for me in those areas for my entire post-Western life. I am so much richer for the few years I spent in close proximity. Please let me know when details of a celebration are available. Ian Shaw - Posted by: Ian Shaw (Friend) on: Nov 21, 2020
