Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or Memory(TOM) LESLIE THOMAS BUTTERWORTH
March 9, 1938 - November 26, 2020
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Tom had a zest for life that was an inspiration to many. His love and devotion to his family, friends and community was incomparable. Tom passed peacefully, at home.
He is survived by his wife Edythe, children, Jeff (Orela) and Colleen (Dave) along with many friends and relatives.
As per Tom's wishes, a private cremation is planned. While an appropriate service is not possible at this time due to COVID, a Celebration of Life will take place (date not yet determined) when circumstances permit.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be appreciated.

My memories of Tom go back to the streets of Winnipeg when I was eight or nine years old, visiting Aunt Jean and Uncle Les in their big, open, welcoming home on a tree-lined street. Tom was always the kind guy who towered over me. So tall and handsome, always with a twinkle in his gentle eyes. I can almost hear his voice when I close my eyes, the way he sometimes referred to my mom, his Aunt Kay. I think he was especially fond of her, for he was her very first nephew, and I'm sure she spoiled him rotten until "Tex" came along :-) Probably she continued to spoil him even after that! I have a little booklet that he wrote about his memories of Aunt Kay and Uncle Art, so I'd be happy to share if you would like to read it. I was so sad to hear of his passing, and I'm sure you all miss him terribly. He was a wonderful, wonderful guy. Love to everyone. Tom was and is my big cousin. The first of the offspring of the Gray girls and boys and always a leader to those of us who followed. And follow we did, and had lots of fun doing so. My earliest memory of Tom was ‘caddying’ on the golf course at Winnipeg Beach during summer vacations with the three Gray girls, Jean, Kay and Marg and all the cousins. Then later on there were the Saturday night poker games (a penny a point) at his parents, Jean and Les. There were life lessons to be learned and sometimes I even came away ahead, but I don’t think Tom ever lost money. Tom had a love for cards and games and was a champion bridge player. It was sad to see Tom deteriorate with the ravages of MS but he never complained and was always cheerful and positive under conditions that would have felled a lesser man. Much love ‘Tex’ - Posted by: Arthur Lang (cousin) on: Dec 10, 2020

Greg & I were introduced to Tom and Edythe back in the late 80's by Greg's step father, Terry Burt. Tom & Edythe made a couple visits to Red Rock Lake, Shared birthdays, weddings together with our family. We remember Tom as a kind and warm person. Good conversationalist and story teller. His presence will be missed in this world & will be fondly remembered. Blessings to Edythe & the family during this time. - Posted by: Greg & Susan Deppendorf (Friend) on: Dec 02, 2020

My sincere condolences to Edythe, Jeff, Colleen and families. Mr. B. was our Basketball coach. He took a crazy bunch of teenage girls out to Estevan for a tournament, and we did not win a game ! However, we were awarded the team with the best sportsmanship. He was so proud of us. Such great memories ! He was a wonderful Dad and supported his community. He touched many lives - - Posted by: Anne Roberts (née Douglas) (Friend) on: Nov 29, 2020

We send our deepest condolences, prayers, and wishes to the entire Butterworth family. Tom and Edyth were consummate friends and hosts to us and Vince and Gail Lovallo. Generous of spirit and time. We are very grateful for the years of Tom’s friendship and have his example to carry with us eternally. More was spoken in laughter than words. Love always. - Posted by: Brian and Monique (Lovallo) Light (Friends) on: Nov 28, 2020

Edythe, Deb & I are very sorry to hear about Tom. Our thoughts are with you. Tom was a great mentor & boss. He had everyone's respect on both sides of the table. Deb & I really enjoyed our group dinners with the old IR gang, especially the murder mystery parties Tom and you cooked up! He will be missed. - Posted by: Keith Martin (Colleague) on: Nov 28, 2020

Dear Edythe and family. We met at the Orchid Apartments when we were so very young and expecting our firstborns. Tom was a terrific guy; always full of fun, games, and jokes, and helpful in every way he could. Wonderful memories! He bought our Volkswagen when we moved to Ottawa and eventually learned to drive it! Cherish your memories of him; we will.
