PAUL KLOWAK
July 2, 1922 - November 26, 2020

On Thursday, November 26, 2020, Paul Klowak passed away at the age of 98 years of natural causes in Winnipeg, with his wife by his side and his family in close touch.
Paul is lovingly remembered by his wife Rose (nee Banash), daughter Bev (Petros), son Brian, siblings, Nick (Audrey) and Joe (Mimi), grandchildren, Paige, Sandra (Joseph) and Andrew, and great-granddaughter Mary Rose, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father Joseph and mother Elena (nee Sawchuk) and siblings, John, Anne, Dave, Sophie, Pete, Evelyn, Mary, Steve, Jennie, George, and Sam and Mary who died in childhood.
Paul's parents both immigrated to Manitoba from western Ukraine with their respective families, met in Manitoba and settled on a farm in Inwood, where Paul grew up. Paul was eager to make it out on his own and left the farm as a young man seeking jobs, often with his older brother Dave. Riding the rails, the long-distance public transportation of the day, took him to several itinerant harvesting jobs in Manitoba and Ontario. This restless spirit of adventure led him to more work in lumberjack camps, then back to Winnipeg to work in the banquet room of the Royal Alex Hotel. Later Paul made regular visits to Toronto buying cars and trucks which he had refurbished and sold in Winnipeg, and held other jobs in the city including bread delivery for Brothers Bakery, before settling into a career as a carpenter.
Paul was enterprising and took on the challenge of building three homes in Selkirk, MB and refurbishing and selling a number of homes in Winnipeg. Paul particularly enjoyed his later work for our provincial government that provided travel to many Northern Manitoba sites repairing provincially owned buildings.
In 1948, Paul married Rose Banash and they settled in Winnipeg's North End, where they raised their two children, Bev and Brian, and remained ever since. Paul loved sharing stories of his adventures and practical jokes from his youth with his family, often with a humorous slant, sometimes starting to chuckle before he would tell you what he was laughing about. He would come up with funny quips when you would least expect it.
Paul and Rose celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary this past October. Rose lovingly and devotedly cared for Paul in the last years of his life.
Paul was happiest when he was working, and in earlier years could often be found in his workshop out back. It seemed there wasn't anything that Paul couldn't fix or figure out... definitely a jack of all trades. He built the family cottage at Winnipeg Beach, and always had a project on the go. Paul was very generous with his time and abilities, always happy to help friends and family. Paul will be lovingly remembered by his family for his strong work ethic, storytelling, kind and gentle disposition, resourcefulness, positive 'take life as it comes' attitude and unwavering sense of humour. He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank his care team including Dr. Koczanski, his homecare workers, the palliative care team and Rev. Dominic Yuen for his regular home visits.
There will be a private family funeral due to current COVID-19 restrictions.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Glen Eden in charge of arrangements.

  • Bob and Darlene Burns offer our sincere sympathy to Rose and her extended family with the passing of Paul. Bob was offered hospitality into their home at 121 Bannerman Avenue when I became a resident of the North End in the late 1960s and had no family in Winnipeg. I appreciated it. Then it was hard to engage Paul in a conversation as he was always busy with his work or on the way to some project. However, in 2012 I arrived back in Winnipeg after a forty years absence, and the Klowak’s hosted a family meal in my “honour”. I was placed to sit across from Paul for a stationary period of time, and we had a great conversation. My long-term memory of Paul pictures him as a gentle giant who contributed to the family, friends, and society through the example of his work ethic and willingness to make this world a much better place. Rose, Darlene and I stand in faith with you now and earlier when you and your family cared for Paul in the winter of his earthly life. May God grant Paul eternal rest and peace! - Posted by: Bob Burns (friend of the Klowak family) on: Dec 01, 2020

  • Our condolences. What a great life. As a child I remember Paul at Christmas celebrations at Aunty Mary and Uncle Walter's and later when we would meet at my occasional visit to Manitoba, his humour and quiet, gentle nature was always present. - Posted by: Roy Dalebozik (Rose's cousin) on: Nov 30, 2020

  • Sending our deepest condolences to Paul's family at this very difficult time. I will always remember Paul as smiling with his shirt sleeves rolled up and busy building or fixing something! Often for friends and neighbours like my parents! So friendly and such a good dad to Bev and Brian! Please give Rose a hug from me ...I know you will all miss him terribly but that his memory will give you the strength to go forward and heal broken hearts. Rest in Peace Paul. - Posted by: Joanne & Marco Aguirre (Lifelong friend of Bev and neighbour for many years) on: Nov 30, 2020

  • In Memorium for Paul Klowak - Rural life has many blessings for family cohesiveness. However, as a cousin of Paul's, I missed the wonderful chance of meeting with Paul at Polson school. Only a couple of miles of homestead separated our two families. I am very thankful that I met Paul and Rose much later in my life as I scoured the region searching for family history and tradition. My work took me beyond the bounds of this birth home, as it did for many. Paul is the epitome of the homesteader salws. This is a tradition I honor in the Klowak family. Thank you, Paul and family; you are all a treasure. What a sweet guy. Be very proud of him. He loved you all so dearly. Blessings of Peace, Stan Watowich and Family in appreciation of his memory - Posted by: Stanley N. Watowich (Cousin to Paul Klowak) on: Nov 29, 2020

  • Uncle Paul was a gentle man, who's memory I will cherish. I recall his laugh at family gatherings. I recall his smile. My favorite memory is as a very young boy, where he would have me latch on to one of his fingers with both my hands and he would lift me high in the air. This I remember well! We wish the family peace and comfort. Tim & Michele Banash - Posted by: Tim Banash (Nephew) on: Nov 28, 2020
