CLARICE PATRICIA COHEN

Clarice Patricia (Pat) Cohen, 88, passed away peacefully at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg on November 23, 2020, after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She was laid to rest at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.
Born to Gwen and Jack Cohen, Pat's early years were spent at the YMHA, B'nai B'rith Camp, and in Habonim. She attended the University of Manitoba where she was granted a B.A. and a BSW, and then moved to Montreal to work as a social worker with Holocaust survivors. After meeting her husband Hymie (Hy) Cohen, also a Winnipegger, they decided to marry in 1954 in Winnipeg at Mom's family home, returned to Montreal, and later came back to Winnipeg in 1958 to start a family.
Pat enjoyed raising her children, volunteering for the PTA, and working with Hy and several other families to help establish the reform congregation, Temple Shalom. After her children were established in school, with Dad's support, she returned to the University of Manitoba in her 30s where she obtained her M.A. in clinical psychology. She proceeded to work in adoptions, and later was an agency manager for the Children's Aid Society.
Pat had an active interest in the arts and frequented the MTC, the WAG, and the Manitoba Symphony. Once retired, she volunteered in Adult ESL classes and enjoyed helping teach English to newcomers to Canada. Pat was an avid bridge and mahjong player, enjoyed exploring new restaurants in Winnipeg, and loved going to the film series at McNally Robinson. She exercised regularly, travelled extensively, and had a circle of loving friends.
Pat leaves to mourn her children, Beryl Cohen (Mike Jourard) and David Cohen (Jackie), grandchildren, Paula, Sari and Marli Cohen, her nieces, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Hy and her son Matthew. She will be sorely missed by many.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brian Sharkey for his years of outstanding medical care. He not only cared for Mom during her last three weeks, he also shared relevant updates with her children with deep compassion and honesty. Thanks as well to Corine Pourier (Patient Client/Relations) and the nursing staff of the Victoria Hospital for their compassion and dedication. A special thank you to Rabbi Allan Finkel of Temple Shalom for your spiritual guidance during our time of mourning.
In memory of Pat Cohen, donations can be made to Lung Cancer Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, or an organization of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Pat was a friend of mine at the U. of Manitoba. I knew both Pat and her husband Hy. I can't remember if she was a sorority sister of mine (Iota Alpha Phi) but we had many laughs together. My deepest sympathy to her family. Fondy, Cynthia Goldberg in Chicago. - Posted by: Cynthia Goldberg (Friend) on: Dec 05, 2020
