WALTER KOSTIUK
February 21, 1930 - November 25, 2020
We know he is at peace and reunited with his one true love, our beloved and missed mother and grandmother, Monica Remona, who is waiting at the Gates of Heaven for dear Dad.
Dad leaves behind his sons, Douglas William (friend Lynne Eve) and Walter John, as well as cherished grandchildren Michael Walter, Heather Colleen (her husband and his friend Andy James Allen), Taylor and Daniel (both of BC).
Walter was born on February 21, 1930 in Winnipeg, where we lived for most of his life. He met Mona at a dance hall when he was 19. It was love at first sight and they married in 1951, at the Fort Garry Hotel. He loved spending time at the cabin with his family in Falcon Lake. His favorite pastimes was travelling and gaming, especially visiting the racetrack with Mona by his side. Though they only had two boys, their house was always full of family and friends, visiting or living with them through out the years. His greatest joy was donating time and money for his favorite organizations, namely the Victoria Cool Aid Society and the Salvation Army (of Winnipeg and Victoria, BC) as well as collecting bread goods, vegetables and fruit for those in need. Dad was one of the hardest working men out there and worked almost his entire life for the Fruit and Vegetable Industry. He began first at Roger's Fruit, then Western Grocers, Merchant's Consolidate. He loved sales and was a true businessman. In the 80s, Mona and Wally moved to BC, where he finished his career in ship-building industry, as a supervising foreman for Burrard Yarrows of Victoria, BC. Always a friendly guy, he gained friendships with nearby farmers and operated a stand for them after retiring, selling fresh fruit and vegetables.
When Mona fell sick, he faithfully took care of her, visiting her daily at her home until she passed. He remained in BC for many years, keeping active and meeting new people. Even though he didn't like the winters, he returned to Winnipeg a few years ago and rekindled many friendships. He loved driving around in his van and spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He always had a kind word to say and had great advice for all. A few years ago, he moved into Amber Meadows and loved his new "family" there (Brenda, Jeff, Oscar and many more). He enjoyed all the music shows and lovely meals. Then in April, he moved to Holy Family, where we lived out the last of his days, surrounded by such loving and caring staff.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to pay respects to Dad may kindly donate to his favorite charity, the Winnipeg Salvation Army (Booth Centre).
At this time, we are planning for an outdoor service in Spring 2021, details will be announced at a later date.
The family also would like give thanks to all the wonderful and caring staff, care givers, nurses and doctors for their undivided attention to our beloved father, Walter during his illness and transition to the great beyond.
Thank you Dad for all the wonderful laughs and time together! We will miss you and your kind smile always. Love you forever xox

I met Mr, Kostiuk when he would come to the Kildonan to visit his son Douglas. He was a dapper gentleman with a jaunty hat, an engaging smile and always had a kind word. Listening to his stories of years gone by was a treat. God rest his soul. - Posted by: patricia picklyk (friend) on: Dec 05, 2020
