DAVID CARL HENSRUD
1963 - 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden death of David Hensrud on Thursday, December 3, 2020, in Kenora, Ontario at his residence.
He is survived by his mother Meg and father Bill Cameron, sister and brother-in-law, Wendy and David Thiessen, brothers and sisters-in-law, Reid and Jenny Cameron, Ian and Jane Cameron, Margie Kirkjan Cameron, 12 nieces and nephews, his aunt, Sue Johnson, his fine friend Alessio Artozi and other family near and far. David was predeceased by his grandparents, Archie and Muriel Scott, father Carl Hensrud, brother Scott Cameron and nephew Evhen Cameron.
David was born on May 17, 1963 in Kenora, Ontario. He attended public school in Keewatin and Kenora. He furthered his education with a year of bible school at Capenwray on Thetis Island, BC, and then chef training at George Brown College in Toronto. David took additional courses over the years to enhance his skills as a chef, caterer and baker.
After finishing his education he returned to Kenora and ran his own bistro and catering company. Following that he moved west where he settled for a time in Vancouver and later, Gabriola Island. He loved his time there and created a network of friends, acquaintances and business contacts. David then returned home and became a fixture at the Kenora Farmer's Market and has baked and cooked for many people in Kenora and the surrounding area.
David's passions included food, friends, family, and of course Lake of the Woods. He was generous and kind, happiest when he could cook and bake for others. He loved the lake. Our grandparents' cottage held a special place in his heart. David had an incredible network of friends from all walks of life. He loved music and had a strong tenor voice. He was a member of numerous musical casts and choirs over the years. The choirs included the Fifth Avenue Singers, G Clef and Music Men, and also the numerous choirs in churches he attended when he lived in British Columbia. He was a faithful member of the Knox United Church choir.
Knox was an important part of David's life, a place where he participated fully in many aspects of his faith and forged long lasting relationships. Dave loved delving into the history of his family and was a collector of old family photos, memorabilia and stories. Finally, and most importantly David loved to laugh and make others do the same.
Due to present circumstances we will celebrate David's life at a later date, hopefully close to Lake of the Woods with friends and family there to honour his memory.
Donations in David's memory gratefully received by Knox United Church, 116 - Fifth Avenue South, Kenora, ON P9N 2A2 to the Knox Pantry Outreach. For donations to the Knox Pantry Outreach the cheques must be made out to Knox United Church and then the Pantry as a designation either on the memo line or on the back of the cheque.

  • Oh my gosh, this is sad news indeed. David was incredible. The stories he told of butler life on our front porch on Inglis Lake rd made such an impression on me and our whole family. I really looked up to him, and every time I attempted a filled squash blossom it was to try to reach his culinary heights. It was a special treat when Auntie Meg brought him over with her on our summer visits. It’s hard to accept such a vibrant person is gone, and I offer his friends and family sincere condolences from the Bole/Cullens. - Posted by: Heather Cullen (Lifelong family friends) on: Dec 03, 2022

  • My deepest condolences to the family. I met David years ago in Winnipeg. He made a room light up with his bigger than life personality. That laugh, his laugh filled a room and just could change the climate of what was going on, he knew how to make an entrance. He was so much fun and full of energy. I lost touch with him after he moved out west. Last time I saw Dave was in a chance meeting at a book store in Vancouver. So full of energy, a great people person, really was drawn to people and never shy to offer up his warmth, sense of humour and love of food. Sorry to hear he has passed. - Posted by: Robert (Winnipeg Friend) on: Dec 12, 2020
