FREDERICA VAN DE WERVE
1923 - 2020
She is survived by her brother, Ben van de Werve; her niece and nephews in Holland, Patty, Willem Hans and Michael Muller; her niece and nephew-in-law Lynnea and Dion Rioux and Lucas her grandnephew; her nephews, Jamie and Peter Moffat and their families, and her niece and nephew-in law, Marijke and David Couch and their family.
Frederica was born in Cheltenham, England to an English mother and a Dutch father. She was raised in Holland and started work as a governess during the Second World War in Holland and Switzerland. She moved to Canada and received Canadian citizenship in 1958. She always loved children and spent most of her life caring for them despite never having any of her own. She often talked about the 14 blind boys she became "mother" to at a school in Vancouver and she loved her work with children and their families as a Social Worker in Winnipeg.
Once she retired, her favourite pastime was to go to Assiniboine Park to walk among the beautiful flowers, feed the birds and meet new people. She will be remembered most fondly for her love of nature, her love of walking and her keen interest in people. We will always remember you.

I am so sad to here the news. She was a unique and very special lady. I had the privilege to work with her and share a cup of tea with on occasion. I loved her many stories. - Posted by: Anne Grewar (friend and colleague) on: Jan 17, 2021

I often wondered where Frederica disappeared to. We made a special connection as did Danny Duff, Maurice Larson and management and other staff at Assiniboine Park. Thank you for taking care of Frederica in her final years. We all treasured her, she was so special. - Posted by: Pat (Friend and gardener at Assiniboine Park) on: Jan 16, 2021

I knew Fredrica for 25 years. We met when I became her tax person. Over the years we developed a remarkably close friendship. I visited with her regularly. She was every inch a very cultured lady. We had hot chocolate and special cookies she would go to the bakery to buy for our get-togethers. We were able to go for lunch at her favorite restaurant at Rand McNally Books I was sorry when she moved to Calgary without a chance to say goodbye. I will now say "Goodbye Fredrica." I will miss you. - Posted by: Carol Sulyma (Friends) on: Jan 07, 2021

I knew Frederica for approximately 15 years and had the pleasure of hosting her many times in my home in Cooks Creek. A group of us would gather around the dining table and lively conversations were always present. I now live on PEI and have some of her beautiful nature photographs to decorate my walls. One evening, some years ago, she was honoured at the conservatory at Assiniboine Park and I have a group picture of us all from that occasion. - Posted by: Denise Carriere (Friend) on: Dec 21, 2020
