DEBORAH MARGARET (HAY) GRIMES
January 12, 1959 - December 7, 2020
Predeceased by her late husband Bruce Robert Grimes; father G. Michael Hay, and father-in-law Douglas Robert Grimes. She leaves behind her beautiful mom Kareen; Mrs. E. Grimes; and three brothers and their wives, Phil (Deanna) Hay; David (Lisa) Hay; Darren (Zuleika) Hay; and many wonderful Hay and Grimes nieces and nephews. Deb also leaves behind her sister-in-law and spouse Wendy (Jim) Krovats; and brothers-in-law and spouses, Mike (Ruth) Grimes and Doug (Kelly) Grimes.
Deb's only regret was seeing it end too soon, but she had a life well enjoyed with everyone. Deb wanted all of you to know how much she appreciated your love and was honoured and thankful to have had so many wonderful people in her life. Deb's second greatest love after family and friends, were her dogs, and there were many.
Deb also wanted to remind you that she is a patient person, so when the time comes for you to join her, she will have cold drinks ready for you. However, take your time and feel free to test her patience.
Her last words of wisdom were, "May the Lord watch over me and thee, while we are absent one from the other"....
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of Deb's favourite charities, the BC Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the animal care group of your choosing.
Special thanks go out to Dr. Oosthuizen, Cheryl, Dr. Brooks, the CancerCare staff, along with the Palliative Care staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital (Victoria, BC), for their wonderful care and compassion.
There will be a celebration of Deb's life at a later date due to current COVID-19 restrictions.
Please email Maureen Gros (rmgros1@shaw.ca) with your contact info, if you would like to be notified about the future plans for a Celebration of Life for Deb.

So sorry to hear of Deb's passing. We were neighbours for many years on Tache avenue in Winnipeg. She was a wonderful lady and we had many good parties both at her house and ours and on the street. My late wife Liane loved Deb's dogs and envied her very much for having them. We were very fortunate to have known her. - Posted by: Aurele Teffaine (friend) on: Dec 16, 2020

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Debbie. Cherished will be the memory of her gifted piano playing and her beautiful long blonde hair. My sincere condolences to you Aunty Kareen, cousin Phil, David and Darren and your families. - Posted by: Robin Mayer (Brown) (Cousin) on: Dec 14, 2020

Deb and I first crossed paths in high school, where I knew her as a skilled athlete who competed across multiple sports. Go Titans! But it was about 10 years later -- when we coincidentally ended up as neighbours in Norwood-- that I really came to know her. We reconnected (not surprisingly) while walking our dogs and that led to many "adventures" (some good, some bad, all memorable) involving Deb, Bruce and I. It was on one of those adventures that I came to understand the true depth of Deb's inner strength. The three of us had decided to hike the Mantario Trail one fall. It was raining hard when we left the parking lot but under the always optimistic leadership of Bruce, off we set regardless. The temperature dropped and the rain became sleet and then heavy, really wet snow. Yet on we trudged, carrying way, way too much stuff on our backs over steep hills and across muck filled swamps. It was miserable. My vivid memory of that trip is reaching the top of one impossibly steep, slick climb, turning around and seeing Deb coming up behind me -- the snow piling up on her pack, her face barely visible from under her hood -- and her looking up at me with her face set in grim determination, her teeth visibly shattering. She reached where I was, looked over, smiled and asked me if I knew if the Tim Horton's was around the next bend. That was Deb. Whether it was chasing Bruce down a double black mogul run (on GS skis), bashing across to Bingo Bay against a fierce headwind in the pitch black in an overloaded open boat of questionable reliability (but WuzBeechs was free!) or out walking her dogs in a blizzard at -35, Deb met life with her quick wit, her infectious smile and that quiet, deep inner strength. The world is a poorer place without her. She will be missed, - Posted by: Tom Saunders (Friend) on: Dec 13, 2020

We were so sorry to hear of Deb’s passing & were grateful for updates for the Victoria crew. Deb was a wonderful woman & it hurts that she is gone so soon. We were all going to Victoria in April but due to COVID, our Déjà vu party was postponed, it would have been nice to see Deb one more time. She had a wonderful life with both Bruce & Derek, but it was way to short. Rest In Peace... Jenith & Tim Dack - Posted by: Jenith & Tim Dack (Friends) on: Dec 12, 2020
