WALTER ALLEN SCHELLENBERG
February 18, 1938 December 7, 2020
Walter is predeceased by his Mother Helen and Father John Schellenberg, brothers Leonard and Bob. He is survived by beloved wife of 59 years, Edna Schellenberg along with children Karen (Tony), Brad, Gord (Linda) and Sandra (Kelly), grandchildren Shaylyn and Eric, Alexa, Madison, MacKenzie, Andrew and Noah, Brendan and Bailee. Along with his brothers, Dave (Eleanor), Ron (Sandra), Ken (Laureen), and Gerry (Mary), as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Dad (Wally) was kind, generous, had a great sense of humour and always happy to see you. He supported his kids, grandkids and basically anyone that crossed his path. He loved to tell stories and would take the time to listen to stories told to him. He was loyal and loved his family and friends. He absolutely loved his Edna, was proud of his kids and cherished his grandkids. Our dad met our mom Edna in Prince George, BC and married her in 1961. They moved back to Winnipeg and started their family. Dad started teaching and spent many years at Norquay School. He developed lifelong friendships with staff and students and was even invited to students' weddings down the road.
Every summer we travelled to Paulhaven, Alberta, where we attended church camp for a week. Dad was camp director where more lifelong friendships were acquired. We then headed to Prince George, BC to spend time with our mom's family. He cherished all the Miller family and loved family gatherings, guitar playing, singing, fishing trips on the Parsnip river and time spent at Summit Lake. Dad was a huge member of the Woseley community. He loved community sports and volunteered his time at Laura Secord CC. He was a coach, manager and sports convener. He also took care of the community club and spent many nights with his buddy Larry flooding the ice. He emceed banquets, organized fundraisers and team trips. He made sure all kids in the community got a chance to play sports. He was everyone's hockey dad.
Our family would like to express our gratitude to Oakview Place for the outstanding Care that Wally received. A special thanks to the staff of 1 North. Donations may be made in dads' memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
We know you are at peace now dad. You probably have a beer in your hand and are telling some great stories. We will miss you and love you!
Due to Covid-19 restrictions a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

I am saddened by the news of Wally's passing and want to extend my sincere condolences to Edna and family. During our shared art teaching in Winnipeg we met quite frequently during those teaching years and the last few years at Assiniboia Downs. It was always a pleasure to share a conversation with Wally and reminisce some of the "old" times. His friendly smile and good sense of humour will be missed. - Posted by: Erling Braaten (friend) on: Dec 17, 2020

To all the Schellenberg Family we send our very heart felt sincere condolences. Many hugs to each of you. We have known Gord & Linda, Alexa, Maddy and Mac as our lake family for many years. Thru them we have come to know all the Brothers and Sisters and especially dad and mom, Wally & Edna . You all have became a extension of our own direct families. Wally would never pass anyone by without his big smile and sharing an enjoyable conversation. He was so very proud of his family. Edna , you were the star of his life. In his own words he had said to me "what more could a man ask for". May you all find peace and comfort in the many fond memories and many times of laughter you shared. Cherish these as a gift given to you by Wally. Those with faith know where we are going is even to be better than where we've been. Wally will be patiently waiting and smiling to see you all again. Shared regards, love from each of us your Dorthy Lake Family.... " Life has to eventually end but love doesn't. " - Posted by: Rick Stephens (Friend) on: Dec 15, 2020

Our prayers and thoughts are with the whole Schellenberg family. Mr Schellenberg was a huge influence to us Proutt boys growing up. Coaching us in sports or getting together as families were common and he always had a way of giving us direction without pressure if we strayed from "course". Visits to Minaki were always memorable with the stories that were told. His wit was always ready and ready to go. RIP Mr Schellenberg and hugs later Mrs Schellenberg and crew. - Posted by: Judy and Trevor Proutt (Family friend) on: Dec 14, 2020

I am sorry to hear of the passing of Wally. I have many fond memories of our teenage years together. We had many adventures with our coupes. He had a 1930 chevy coupe, I had a 1929 Desoto, both with rumble seats. We managed to fit six people in each car for our road trips to Morris for coffee and pie. Lots of adventures! My condolences to his family, he was a great guy. - Posted by: Bob (Sudsy) Sutherland (Old Transcona Friend) on: Dec 13, 2020

My condolences to the Schellenberg boys and thier families and especially to Edna and family. I'm the youngest of the cousins on the Driedger side. So being 20 years younger than Wally I didn't see or know him that well. My memories of him at family gatherings was of a man always smiling, laughing and interesting to be around. I last saw him a year ago at my mom (his aunts's) 100th birthday party. Even with Alzheimer's his smile and wit was infectious. Rest in peace. There are only a few teachers that stand out to me from my childhood and Mr. Schellenberg was one of them. He was an amazing and kind teacher. Many you rest in peace. My condolences and my heartfelt thoughts are with the family. I hope Edna that you and the family are doing OK at this time. Wally was a long-term friend and he was my teacher at Norquay elementary the kindest heart the most wonderful person you would ever meet. He enjoyed my parents and became friends with my parents and my parents loved him very much and so did I. He will be sadly missed and we lost one of the good ones at a young age. Love you Wally now you can rest and enjoy telling stories to your old friends that have passed. - Posted by: Ricardo musto (Long time of the family) on: Dec 12, 2020

Wally was one of those people that you always remembered because of his kindness and caring as well as his love of life. I taught with Wally at Norquay school in the ‘80’s, and still treasure a token of his friendship he gave to me so many years ago. It is a school picture of myself embedded in one of his hard plastic creations. His artistry was amazing! My heartfelt condolences to all the family. You have lost a great man whose legacy lives on in you and in all whose lives he touched! Rest in peace dear Wally … ‘Til we meet again... then lots of laughs! - Posted by: Linda Boughton (Teaching colleague) on: Dec 12, 2020
