(nee CRAIG)

It is with sincere sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Christie Melnychenko on December 14, 2020, at Park Manor Personal Care Home. She succumbed to Covid-19 on her 88th birthday, just nine days after losing her loving husband Roy on December 5, 2020.
She was also predeceased by her two precious children, Donna and Robert; parents, George and Mary; brothers, Stanley and George; and her sister Doris, with whom she had a special lifelong bond.
Born to Scottish immigrants, Mary was a Canadian with a tartan twinkle in her eye, and a "highland" sense of humour in her soul.
She married Roy in 1958, and together they shared 62 remarkable years. She devoted her life to her family, tirelessly addressing their changing needs with courage. She was exceptional!
Nature was an important element in Mary's life. This was reflected in her love for the outdoors, whether it was filling bird feeders, picking weeds, or enjoying the scenery at Manitoba's beautiful lakesides.
Always a sports enthusiast, she enjoyed all facets of this pastime, from football and baseball, to the Olympics.
Mary took a keen interest in world events and was our "go-to" geography specialist. To many, however, her most notable achievements were in the kitchen. From her addictive baking, to her scrumptious cabbage rolls, all would grace the table at holiday meals and be rapidly devoured.
She will be affectionately remembered by all who knew her.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a service will be held at a later date.
If you so desire, a donation may be made in her memory to the St. Amant Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Mary was such a loving and wonderful woman. I certainly miss all our wonderful chats we had through the years at St Amant. I always looked forward to their visit. Roy and Mary were so devoted to their children. Very rarely did they miss their visits. Every Tuesday Thursdays and the weekends they would come in. Mary will be very much missed by her St. Amant family. I will cherish all our long conversations we have had over the 15 years i spent caring for Donna. She will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to the family. Roy and Mary are with their beloved children again, RIP - Posted by: Jaimee Adams (Employee at St Amant ) on: Jan 01, 2021

  • We were saddened to hear that Mary and Roy have both passed due to Covid. They were an amazing couple who set an example with their devotion to their children. Mary and Roy were very good to myself and my brother Peter. Every summer when we were young, they would pick us up daily for a week and take us to Patricia Beach for a day of fun in the sun with Donna and Bobby. Mary made the best shortbread cookies!!! Many more memories from their early days and living upstairs in our parents home. Hoping that the many memories help the family with this very sad time. • Donna and Bobby were two of the students I worked with at Prince Charles School. We could all tell that they were loved and cherished by Roy and Mary. I studied lots about working with people who have disabilities. However. I learned way more about how to treat people with dignity, whatever their individual challenges, from those two parents than from all my book learning. What great people! - Posted by: John VanWalleghem (Teacher to Donna and Bobby) on: Dec 19, 2020
