AUNA - MARIE BROWN
(nee BERG)
Auna will be lovingly remembered by her husband Bill Brown; son Chris Brown; brothers, Bob (Lynne) Berg and John (Linda) Berg and by everyone she connected with and created friendships with over the years.
Auna was born on October 7, 1946 in Winnipeg, MB to Dale and Mary Berg. She met and married Bill Brown in 1973 in Winnipeg; they moved and raised their son Chris in Portage la Prairie.
Auna was involved with organizations in Portage from the day she arrived.
She was involved in the formation of the women's shelter and the Herman Prior Centre. She was chair of the board for United Way and for Big Brothers Big Sisters. She also served on the boards of the College of Dieticians of Manitoba and Manitoba Possible (Society of Manitobans with Disabilities). She created the Portage Area Refugee Coalition, which is responsible for bringing three Syrian families to Portage.
Auna began her career as a public health nurse in Selkirk. She transferred to Portage and eventually became director of the home care program. After retiring, she spent two years as director of the Portage Women's Shelter. Her final job was her favourite instructor for the health care aide program at Red River Community College.
Auna was nominated to the Honour 150 program, a committee created to honour 150 Manitobans from across the province who are quietly making a difference in their community.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Auna's memory to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Portage la Prairie Inc., 15 Tupper Street S. Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1W7.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com

I first met Auna when she and I volunteered at CRYPT - Committee Representing Youth Problems Today - in the summer of 1968, and we continued to be friends until we lost track of each other sometime toward the end of the 1990s. I have often thought of her since then, and am sorry I did not have a chance to tell her how wonderful my memories of her are, how good a person she was, how much she helped people (including me), and how valued she was. I will miss her, and she will be missed by many. What a wonderful wonderful woman! Condolences to her family from me and my wife, who met her only once but was struck by how beautiful a person she was. - Posted by: Lawrie Cherniack (friend) on: Dec 19, 2020
