DANIEL WILLIAM HARTE

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Daniel (Dan) Harte on December 12, 2020 from complications of the COVID-19 virus at the age of 84.
He will be greatly missed by his three sons, Kevin, Jim of Toronto, Neil (Heather) and granddaughters, Raquel and Keira of Kitchener, as well as his brother John (Helen) and family of Seattle, Washington. Dan was predeceased by his longtime partner Candis Johannson in 2016. He will also be especially missed by his best friend, Leechan Sookram and his family (Cynthia, Leanne, Ryan, Tyra, Dryden). The family is very grateful for their friendship, love and support over the years. They were his second family.
Dan was born in 1936 on the farm in County Wicklow, Ireland. He emigrated to Canada in 1955, taking a Cunard ocean liner across the pond, then making his way to Winnipeg to join some of the Irish clan who came before him. Dan enjoyed a long career as a manager at the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission, initially in Pine Falls, Manitoba, where he met his wife Ingrid (nee Hundevad). He transferred back to Winnipeg in 1969 and retired in 1996. Dan had many great friendships from his time working for the Commission. Dan was an avid golfer in the summer, and enjoyed many a round with his longtime friend Harold Irwin. After retirement, he loved travelling to hot destinations in the winter with Candis and friends.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Dan's life will take place at a later date, to be determined when conditions allow.
The family would also like to thank the staff of Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence and Oakview Place for their compassionate care.
As expressions of sympathy, please consider donating to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • My Dad, Bruce Burke worked with Mr, Harte for many years and they became fast friends. Mr. Harte was at many of our family celebration. Thanksgiving and Christmas (usually held on Boxing Day, as us girls were with our boyfriends family) Mr. Harte was a fixture for many years. In fact, one fateful Thanksgiving, it him who discovered why my not quite two year old son was walking funny!! My son was going around taking sips from everyone's drink and managed to somehow to drink all of Mr. Harte's wine, without anyone noticing until Mr. Harte wondered why his glass empty!!! Mr. Harte, you will always be remembered and thought of very fondly. Rest In Peace, and say Hi to my Mom for me. - Posted by: Marie Rucki (Friend) on: Dec 20, 2020

  • The world is a much sadder place without Danny in it. I worked for and with Danny for many years at the MLCC and our friendship extended outside of work. I especially remember a trip to Jamaica with Danny and Candis, and many very enjoyable golf tournaments in Cavalier ND. Danny was warm, kind, very personable and always a gentleman. Rest in Peace. • Danny was such wonderful man. He had a very gentle and kind soul. Working at the commission he was my Late husband Robert Armstrong's manager. One thing Rob always said, when you talked Danny always listened. So sad he has left us. R.I.P Danny. - Posted by: Heather Armstrong (Friend) on: Dec 19, 2020
