DAVID (DICK) NORMAN DOLMAN
April 7, 1937 November 27, 2020
"The singer has sung his last song."
He is survived by his four daughters and their families: Sherry Julius (Gary), Debbie Dolman Baillie (John), Robin Kiesman (Kevin), and Tracy Dolman; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and brother-in-law Jim Badali and family. He lost his beloved sister Shirley Badali earlier this year.
Dad was predeceased by his second wife of over 32 years, June Halliday, whom he adored and missed very much. He leaves to mourn her children and their families.
Born to parents Emma (Knopf), and David in Kelowna, BC., the family relocated to Winnipeg when Dad and his sister were children. A Weston boy, he attended Cecil Rhodes and Tec Voc before joining the Canadian Air Force in 1957. He was a Metals Technician and worked with the Search and Rescue unit in the Armed Forces before retiring in 1981. He then worked at Bristol Aerospace for ten years as a Manufacturing Engineer.
Dad met his first wife Beryl (Anderson) and had three daughters before being transferred to CFB Trenton, where their fourth daughter was born. The family moved back to Winnipeg due to Mom's health. Dad did his best to raise his daughters throughout those challenging years, and his devotion will always be remembered. Although there were many hardships, there was also much happiness.
Dad was a man of many talents, but music was his passion and constant companion. He played violin and piano, but his instrument of choice was the guitar. Throughout his life, he entertained many with his melodic voice made for ballads. Entertaining was a family affair. From formal performances, to sitting in front of a campfire, there was always music and singing to be heard. When he lost his ability to play, he became a "Karaoke enthusiast".
A fun-loving man, Dad took pleasure in a good joke or cartoon. He had an excellent sense of humour. He enjoyed sports and was a devoted fan. He was known to enjoy a beer or two by a fire in the back yard, or at the lake. He was happiest at his cottage in Hillside Beach. He relished a good game of cribbage, which he played until his recent illness. Dad was a life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion where he enjoyed playing darts or crib. He participated in any event that involved singing or dancing. He could jitterbug with the best.
After the loss of June, and several physical health challenges, Dad moved into the Portsmouth Retirement Community, where he was known for his cartoons and crooning to the ladies. He loved to terrorize residents on his electric scooter, and could often be found riding around the grounds looking for a place to sneak a cigarette. When his health deteriorated, he moved into the Brightwater Seniors Living where he was known as the "singer" by staff and residents. Dad continued to charm with his wit, personality, and beautiful voice until the day he died. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
"Into the light you go, with peace of mind and a song in your heart, you will suffer no more."
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
