W. RUTH WOOD
(nee DYCK)
Ruth, the third of four girls, was born May 14, 1935, in Morris, MB; however, she moved to East Kildonan early in her life.
From a young age, Ruth delighted in the idea of being a mother. She was married at 19 and stayed home to raise her three children and later on cared for her grandchildren. Her family brought her great joy.
In 1972, her caring and nurturing spirit led her to become a nurse. Ruth worked as a nurse in many capacities, both professionally and in a personal sense by caring for her ailing friends and family members.
Ruth was also known for being adventurous. Between 1980 to 2002 she moved 17 times, including twice to British Columbia and once to Newfoundland. Curiously, she landed back in East Kildonan six blocks from where she raised her family and nine blocks from where she grew up. Ruth's favourite place was Hollyhock Learning Centre on Cortes Island, BC, where she attended many enriching retreats.
Ruth had many interests, but particularly enjoyed poetry, baking, and quilting. She loved to recite poems and gift loved ones with homemade jam and cookies. Her hazelnut torte and lebkuchen were a staple at many gatherings. Ruth's favourite colours were pink, red, and purple. She adorned herself with these colours, often found in her hair, clothing, and vehicles.
Ruth self described herself as a "spiritual explorer." She was born into a Mennonite Brethren family, but throughout her life explored Wicca, Buddhism (both Tibetan and Theravada), and Unitarianism. At her death she was a non-theist Quaker and was an active member in the community.
Ruth was predeceased by parents, John and Helena Dyck; sisters, Agnes Dyck and Katy Unruh; her three brothers, Hans, Peter and Gerhard who died as children within weeks of each other; her granddaughter Helena Stanley, and dear nephew Ramsy Unruh.
Ruth will be remembered fondly by sister Elizabeth Dyck, her former husband Nikolai (Tamara) Huebert; children, Joy (Harold) Huebert, Dave (Betty) Huebert, and Don Huebert; grandchildren, Kathryn (Chris) Biddulph, Sarah (Zach) Huebert, Jack (Molly) Stanley, and Elena (Geoffrey) Huebert; great-grandson Nathan Biddulph; nieces and nephews, Phil (Diane) Unruh, Tim (Jeanette) Unruh, Noni (Phil) Goertzen, and Christy (Evan) Jennings; niece-in-law Shannon (Paul) Kutcher, 16 great-nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Winnipeg, once we can all meet again.

My heartfelt condolences, Dave, on the loss of your Mother. Ruth was a true spiritual seeker, and I am grateful to have known her. She once baked an apple pie for me and my family. We all agreed it was the best apple pie we'd ever eaten. I think of Ruth every time I eat a slice of apple pie. To date, hers still holds "The Best Apple Pie Ever" title. Ruth was truly one of a kind who was always looking for new experiences spirituality, and thru lifestyles, travel, fashion and general adventures. Forthright and honest she often shocked and embarrassed us with her opinions and sense of humor. She was also a thoughful, supportive and loving "Granny" to grandson Jack, acting as a confidant and advisor. She definitely broke the mould when it came to being a mother in law and a human being and will be sorely missed. To J. Alfred Prufrock's question "Do I dare to eat a peach?", Ruth answered an enthusiastic "Yes!". - Posted by: Harold Stanley (son-in-law) on: Dec 26, 2020
