While doing one of the things she loved most, Christmas baking with her daughter Linda, Ellis suffered a stroke, which took her life on December 20, 2020 at Health Sciences Centre.
She is survived by her children Linda, Larry (Joan), and Daryl (Candace), four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ellis was predeceased by her son-in-law Wayne, husband Joe, and parents Emma and George, and sisters, Lily, Gladys, and Edna.
Ellis was born in the north end of Winnipeg, but moved to East Kildonan in the 1950s where she lived for the rest of her life. Mom and Dad operated a market gardening business for a number of years in East Kildonan and Transcona. When they both took up new careers, Mom started working at Scott National. She began in the warehouse and finished her career working as the receptionist. She really enjoyed Scott National, often saying that they treated you like family. She made many lifelong friendships there.
Mom was the hardest worker we knew. She would never just sit if she could help one of us, whether it be cooking, cleaning, gardening or building. The phrase "idle hands" was not in her vocabulary. She instilled in her children the value and reward of hard work. Mom also loved to have fun, going to concerts, spending time at the lake, travelling to Palm Springs and even Mexico at age 91. She was up for it all. She loved car rides and would often join on the casino bus trips that Linda hosted, where the fellow passengers lovingly referred to her as "The Princess" or "Cookie Mom".
Mom's life was not an easy one, but she never complained about anything, including her health. Friends often referred to her as the "Energizer Bunny"- she just never stopped going. Ellis touched a lot of people in her life and will be missed by many.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date when restrictions are lifted.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
