MAURICE KOHUT

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Maurice Kohut on Dec. 19, 2020 at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 94 years. He is survived by his loving wife Stella; four children: Dr. June (Brent) Kohut-Day, Elaine (Cliff) Packer, Jim (Zume) Kohut, and Shaun (Patricia) Kohut; six grandchildren: Mary Ellen, Mark (Rachel), Dr. Matthew, Michael, and Maury Packer, and Dr. Brittney (Caleb) Friesen; two great-grandsons: Roan Friesen and Holden Packer; two sisters: Ann Woytowich and Elsie (Don) Wabick; two brothers: Walter and Peter (Valerie); one brother-in-law: Bill Mandziuk; many nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents: John and Effie; brothers: Bill and Mike; sisters: Josie and Jennie; brothers-in-law: Paul Woytowich and Peter Mihaychuk; and sister-in-law Jean.
Maurice, born and raised in Rosa, MB, completed his education at the Provincial Normal School. His 40-year teaching career began at the age of 17 in a one-room school on Matheson Island. He then worked as a teacher, school principal, librarian and audiovisual coordinator, the latter at Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. One highlight was teaching summer school at the Teachers' College on the island of St. Lucia.
Maurice and Stella were raised in the same community. It was after Teachers' College that they formed a close relationship leading to their marriage in 1954. They shared similar interests like reading, gardening and photography. He also enjoyed electronics, computers and playing the keyboard and saxophone.
Maurice loved his family, assisting them and praising their efforts and achievements. Faith and trust in God were central to Maurice and Stella's lives. They were members of the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church where Maurice served as treasurer of the Parish Council for several years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as Faithful Comptroller for a few years with the Canon Luhovy Assembly.
From his youth Maurice trusted God completely to guide and sustain him.

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,
From whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth" (Psalm 121)

We wish to express our deepest appreciation to Dr. Hilary Bews, and nurses Faye and Natasha from the PARR Intensive Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassionate care for Maurice. Also thank you to Father John Mostivsky for administering the anointing of the sick.
A funeral service will be celebrated by Father John Mostivsky on December 28, 2020 at 12:00 noon at Cropo Funeral Chapel with restricted family attendance. The service will be live-streamed on www.cropo.com. Interment will be at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
Flowers gratefully declined, but donations may be made to a charity of choice.

  • I remember Mr Kohut as a teacher at River East back in the 1960s. He ran the student curling league of which I was a part for four years. He was a very nice man. Nice to hear he lived into his 90s. - Posted by: Herb Sulkers (Former student) on: Jan 11, 2021

  • I would like to offer our sincere condolences upon the passing of your father. I have so many wonderful memories of your family and time spent with June and Elaine as a child and young teen. I wish you peace, love and so many wonderful remembrances to sustain you through this difficult time. Estelle, you were always one of my favorite teachers. God Bless you all - Posted by: Sharon Ann Schellenberg Damon (Childhood friend of June and Elaine) on: Dec 29, 2020

  • I am so sorry to hear of your father’s passing. Memories and family will be your solace now. I went to Earl Grey school with June and Elaine. I recognized your father’s name as I glanced through the paper. I keep in touch with Sharon Schellenberg Damon and remembered the Kohut name. Again, condolences from our family to yours. • My condolences to the Kohut family. Maurice was the Principal of Clearwater School for a year, a long time ago. The family lived next door, and my mother was also a teacher there at the time. I vaguely remember the girls. If I remember correctly, his brother Peter spent the year there too. I've often wondered where they moved to as they were a really nice family.. Once again, please accept my condolences. - Posted by: Sheila Robb (Cairns) (Long ago neighbour) on: Dec 27, 2020

  • Stella and family. Our sympathy and condolences at this sad time. I could not have asked for better neighbors. I had the pleasure to actually work with Maurice after the Norwood fire and help restore his library. I will miss talking with him over the fence. - Posted by: Keith and Marion Thomas (Neighbours ) on: Dec 27, 2020

  • Aunty Stella, June, Elaine, Shaun, Jim and families... We would like to extend our sympathy and condolences on the sudden loss of Uncle Maurice.
