OLGA MICHALCHUK
(PROCIUK)
February 11, 1938 - December 28, 2020
Olga is lovingly remembered by daughters, Alicia and Nadine Peck (Chris); grandchildren, Larissa (Mike) and Andrew (Kelsey); sister Mary Nichiporik (Harry) and family; sister-in-law Sherry Ripak and family; nieces, nephews and many dear lifelong friends.
She was predeceased by her brother Bill Ripak in 2000 and beloved husband Metro of 56 years, in 2017.
Born in Winnipeg, Olga grew up in Transcona and in the heart of the city on Edmonton Street, attending Gordon Bell High School. She worked at the Broadway Pharmacy and The Nutty Club before she met and married Metro in 1960.
Olga's Ukrainian heritage and Orthodox faith were very important to her. Her involvement in the community included singing with the Ukrainian National Youth Federation Choir and All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox parish choir, serving on Carpathia Credit Union and Kalyna Bookstore boards, and involvement with the Ukrainian National Youth Federation, Ukrainian Women's Organization and Ukrainian Women's Congress at both the local and national levels. She sewed hundreds and hundreds of traditional costumes for the students of the UNF School of Dance for decades. Later on, she was very proud to share that "her girls" (daughters and granddaughter) were upholding Ukrainian traditions and cooking in the family.
Olga loved her life - she held her pleasant memories and stories dear and shared them with anyone who would listen: recalling growing up in the city, helping out at the family grocery store in Transcona, funny "lost in translation" moments, many road trips with family and friends, hosting special events around their dining room table, summer weekends at Camp Rusalka - always surrounded by close friends and loved ones.
Olga was very comfortable and content living at Concordia Village. Thank you to all the staff and neighbours who made her years so pleasant and enjoyable. Thank you also to those Olga described as "angels" - her pharmacist Tim, healthcare and homecare providers who helped care for her. Thank you to nurse Tony and staff at Riverview Health Centre for your kindness and compassion in her last few days.
The Divine Liturgy was sung privately on December 31 at Korban Funeral Chapel, followed by interment at Glen Eden Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Fr. Richard Ehrmantraut.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre, CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
