GERALD APPELLE
He is survived by his brothers, Harvey (Faye) of Winnipeg, Morry (Christine) of Ottawa; nieces, nephews and devoted companions, Jagjit/Jeet Claire of Vancouver and Ruth Reindle of Toronto.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Jed attended Machray School, St. John's High School (Tech), and the University of Manitoba before embarking on an extensive career in journalism and media starting as a cub sports reporter with Vince Leah at the Winnipeg Tribune. Beckoned to Toronto by national radio, Jed and his contemporaries honed their craft under the mentorship and vision of Harry Boyle during what is often referred to as the golden age of CBC.
Working under the pen name, Jed Adams, he travelled globally as a freelance journalist and interviewer before returning to Toronto where he created, wrote and produced TV news and programming for all three national networks. He was unabashedly principled in plying his trade, while generously sharing his knowledge and expertise with younger colleagues.
Every bit the renaissance man of a generation that chose their words with care, Jed always took an interest in the lives of others with kindness and curiosity. He engaged freely and enthusiastically, providing illuminating conversation on an eclectic mix of topics. He will be remembered with gratitude, admiration and love.
