MARY BETH DIRAUF
(nee HESS)

It's with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mary Beth Dirauf (nee Hess). Mary Beth died peacefully, with her family at her side, on November 14, 2020, in the North Island Hospital in Comox Valley. In early 2020 she was diagnosed with ALS. Her journey was courageous and inspiring to those closest to her. Mary Beth passed on her own terms, dying with dignity. She was funny and joked all the way to end.
Mary Beth was predeceased by her husband Arno Dirauf in 2007. She is survived by her brother Richard (Betty), and her nephews, Travis (Jacki, Ashby, Jolene) and Scott (Marnel).
Mary Beth Dirauf was born in Ontario to Jean and Harold. Her early youth was spent in Napanee and Sudbury before moving to northern Manitoba in 1956. She spent the balance of her youth growing up in Thompson. She continued her education at the University of Manitoba, where she completed her degrees in Arts and Pharmacy.
Mary Beth then met the "love of her life" Arno Dirauf. Together they worked and farmed near St. Rose DuLac, MB. Mary Beth pursued her career working in both community and hospital pharmacies in the Dauphin region until retirement. In the wintertime, she and Arno took every opportunity to explore the ski hills of western Canada and the US. In the summertime, Mary Beth loved to golf and maintained an active lifestyle.
Following Arno's death in 2007, Mary Beth moved to the Comox Valley, where she would be close to friends and family and be able to ski and golf to her heart's content. She continued to work part-time as a pharmacist.
Mary Beth will be dearly missed. She was fearless, independent, loving, and funny. We look forward to hitting the slopes of Heaven with her and Arno when the time comes.
Mary Beth chose not to have a service. We ask that you embrace a loved one with a smile, and to dedicate your first annual ski run or golf game in her memory.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I was saddened to read that Mary Beth died We knew her and Arno and spent many good times with them at the ski hill of Agassi Mary Beth was so patient to ski with me as she was an excellent skier. She taught me how to get to the bottom of the hill in one piece! We had a lot of fun times on the hill and on the golf course too! I am happy to read that she was with her family and that the end of her suffering was not without her smile and great sense of humour I will indeed think of her as I take to the slopes of Big White (a hill she enjoyed) and when I stand at the first tee this spring, Our sincere condolences to all the family - Posted by: Cathy and Dwight Hopfner (Friend ) on: Jan 19, 2021

  • I am so sorry for your loss. My brother, Brent, and I lived in Moak Lake at the same time as Mary Beth and Ricky Hess. I still share stories about Mary Beth. The whole time our families lived in Moak Lake, almost 3 years, Mary Beth were the only two girls! She was younger than me and still played with dolls so I did , too! Great memories were made during that time of our lives. Thank you Mary Beth! ❤️ - Posted by: Anne Tracy(nee Thrall) (Friend) on: Jan 10, 2021

  • My condolences to you and your family Rick. I am so glad that she was able to part on her own terms, and very happy to read about her life after Thompson! We had connected a couple of years ago on Facebook so have heard from her a few times during that time. May she rest in peace having enjoyed the love of her family here on earth. Hugs to you all.x - Posted by: Cheryl Maltby Annand (Former Thompson neighbour) on: Jan 10, 2021
